Since around 150 people a day are finding the Erie PA Blogs site though search engines, I’ll try and give some helpful info plus a bunch of smartarse, sarcastic answers with the search terms.

I don’t know why there seems to be so much confusion over this. An assessment is an official valuation for tax purposes. In Pennsylvania, it is done at the county level. I’m older and it’s only been done twice in my lifetime. In or around 1970 and again in 2000. Like anything where the government sticks their nose in, the assessment wasn’t done very well. The 2000 assessment figures often have zero relation to the actual value of a property. The actual worth of a house or parcel of land is the amount of money someone will pay for it with an actual check. If you want to know what you assessment is, look at your tax bill. If you want an estimate of the value of your property based on what other properties are selling for in your area, ask me.
