BREAKING NEWS: 1 charge against Filippi Dropped
From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
A judge today acquitted former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi of a felony bribery charge.Washington County Judge Ernest DiSantis let conspiracy charges stand, saying they deserve to be heard by the jury.
The judge also dismissed bribery charges against codefendants Rolf Patberg, Mr. Filippi’s law partner, and Eric Purchase, who managed Mr. Filippi’s first campaign for mayor.
The prosecution rested its case today in the public corruption trial that began last week, and the defense begins its case this afternoon. The trial is being held in Washington County because of extensive publicity in Erie County.
Judge DiSantis said the state did not prove that either Mr. Patberg or Mr. Purchase tried to improperly influence Mr. Filippi or that Mr. Filippi had tried to improperly influence anyone.
Watch for more here tomorrow.
