The New York State Canal Corporation will receive the Peter Wiles Sr. Canal Achievement Award for its role in saving the historic motorship, “Day Peckinpaugh,” at the Canal Society of New York’s annual winter meeting in Rochester, NY on March 4, 2006. Carmella R. Mantello, will accept the award on behalf of Canal Corporation employees who were instrumental in saving the vessel and moving it from Erie, PA to Waterford, NY, at the eastern end of the Canal. The “Peck” was built in 1921 and named the ILI-101. At 259 feet long and 38 feet wide, she was designed fro the dimentions of the Erie Canal. She carried coal along the east coast during World War II. In 1958 she was renamed the Day Peckinpaugh and was converted to a cement carrier from Rome to Oswego. She was the last commercial vessel on the Erie Canal. In 1994, Day Peckinpaugh was sent to Erie PA. In June 2005, The Canal Society of the State of New York purchased this historic vessel.
The supply of Type O is critically low at the Erie Community Blood Bank, making this a dangerous situation for Type O patients. The Community Blood Bank is urging people to come and donate blood. “There has been EXTREMELY heavy usage of type O blood this week.” Says Dan Desrochers Director of Public Relations at the Community Blood Bank. “We are desperate for donors to pull us out of this dangerous shortage. ” The Community Blood Bank is open Friday night until 6pm and is open Saturday morning from 9am to 12:30 pm.
The president of the American Osteopathic Association will visit the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) on Monday, March 6 to meet with the next generation of physicians. Philip L Shettle, DO, of Clearwater, FL will speak to the students at 11 AM. He will discuss national health care issues that will affect these students when they become doctors.

The theater group All An Act Productions is performing the comedy “The Middle Ages” by AR Gurney. The show will run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm through March 5th at East High School, located at 1001 Atkins Street, Erie, Pa 16503. General Admission is $5.
The Woman’s Club of Erie presents the 4th annual Erie’s Famous Food Event to be held at Porters Restaurant and Tap Room on Sunday, March 5. Dozens of Erie’s best restaurants have been invited to participate and display their best dishes. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, children under 10 are free. The Erie Freeze (2-0) beat the Canton Legends (1-1) 61-53 in an American Indoor Football League game played at the Tullio Areana in front of about 3,500 fans.
The 7th ranked Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team won its 20th game of the season by defeating visiting Robert Morris 3-1 Friday night at the Ice Center.
Dave Lefebre of Erie is in 8th palce at the Wal-Mart FLW Tour competition at Pickwick Lake heading into Saturday’s final-round action.
Mike Machuga lost in the round of 32 at the PBA Tour 2006 Pepsi Championship at AMF Riviera Lanes and cashed for $2,500.
Grand Valley State defeated the Gannon University women’s basketball team 73-57 at the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals in Allendale, Michigan.
Fox Chapel defeated the McDowell boys hockey team 3-2 in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Class AAA Penguins Cup Championship Series. Nicholas DiSanti and Miles Gates both scored goals for Erie McDowell (12-10-1). Fox Chapel plays Meadville on Thursday.
The Barrie Colts scored three times in 1:12 early in the third to reverse a one-goal deficit on their way to a 5-3 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night at the Barrie Molson Centre. Adam Berti paced the Otters with a pair. Vince Scott also scored while Justin Hodgman collected two assists. The Sarnia Sting visit the Tullio Arena tonight. You can see the game live on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12, Time Warner Channel 20).
