Erie Police Chief Charles E ‘Chuck’ Bowers announced that he will be retiring. He will have served for 36 years as a City of Erie Police officer. Bowers is exactly the kind of guy you want on your police force. Hard charging, non nonsense, ain’t going to take no crap from no criminal kind of guy. He’s near 60 and still looks like he could take on a football team by himself. Arms of steel with tatoos and a barrell chest. Our city is safer and our quality of life better because he served.
An announcement should be coming shortly on the sale of the former Ethan Allen East Plant in Union City PA. A lumber company is buying the property. They will be shipping products to China. Back in December, Snap-tite purchased the West Plant.

The Kingdom of Harrisburg announced they were giving the peasants a few morsels in the form of grants for equipment at job training facilities. The Meadville campus of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania received $177,253 for equipment in advanced materials and diversified manufacturing industry training programs. Mercyhurst College-North East received $31,031 for equipment in healthcare industry training programs.
Erie Plastics announced the hiring of four new employees, who bring a combined 64 years’ experience to the Center. The new hires are: Coy Herald as a Senior Design Engineer, Charles Webster joined Erie Plastics as Senior Project Engineer, Philip Thornton joined Erie Plastics’ Innovation Center as a Tooling Engineer and Jacob Kent was hired as a new CAD Specialist. Erie Plastics specializes in the design, development and custom injection molding of rigid, thin-wall, plastic packaging components for the consumer product, food and beverage, bottled water, household chemical/detergent, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. A Top 100 injection molding company in the US, Erie Plastics produces more than 10 billion parts annually.

The Erie Broadway Series presentation of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” will be held on Wednesday March 8 at the Warner Theatre. Tickets are still available.
The National Christian Invitational Tournament on March 9-11 at Family First Sports Park. Expect the area hotels and restaurants to be packed.
Seneca High School, 10770 Wattsburg Road, is presenting Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat March 9-11. Tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults.
The Celtic Tenors will perform on Friday, March 10 at 8 pm in the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets run from $15 for students to $30 for adults. The box office number is (814) 824-3000.
The McDowell Center for Performing Arts invites you to a fundraiser production of “The Irish and How They Got That Way” starring: Mike Hayes, Karen Nasca, Michael Malthaner, Jean Malthaner, and Shawn Clerkin. The play will be performed March 10 at 7:30 pm at the McDowell Intermediate Little Theater, 3320 Caughey Road. Tickets are $20 each (includes cookies and punch). Phone 836-6925 for more information. Young Erie Professionals are preparing to announce the 2nd Annual Generation-E Leadership Award winners. This year’s recipients will be honored on Friday, March 10, 2006, during a special event at the Avalon Hotel and Conference Center, 16 W 10th Street, in downtown Erie. A pre-gala reception will kick off the celebration at 6:30 pm, followed by the award presentation and dinner at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $35 for the semi-formal event, and attendees must purchase a ticket in advance.
The Erie Runners Club will be holding their St Pat’s 10K Run/5K Walk on Saturday March 11 at 10 am at Presque Isle State Park.

With the College Hockey America (CHA) playoffs set to take place later this week in Detroit, Mercyhurst remained ranked 7th nationally according to the latest USCHO.com Division I Poll.
The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Men’s Lacrosse poll came out Monday. Mercyhurst remained in fifth place with a 2-0 record after defeating both Catawba and St. Andrew’s on the road last week.
The RIT men’s track and field squad completed at the Trinity College Last Chance Meet at Yale University last weekend. The Distance Medley relay team which included Chris Schauerman (Erie, PA/Fairview) finished third.
