A man was robbed and stabbed yesterday at 15th and Ash Streets, an area referred to as Crack Alley. For those of you who don’t know the area, just feet away from where the man was robbed is the razor wire topped fence of the Erie County Prison. Anyone ever think about outdoor security cameras in case a prisoner ever escapes? Seems a bit strange that the parking lots of Wal-Marts have better security than the sidewalk around a prison.
Insurance Auto Auctions, a automotive total loss and specialty salvage services company, announced the acquisition of Northwest Penn Auction Sales and Warren County Salvage located in Garland and Erie, Pennsylvania.
Bishop Donald W Trautman of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie has granted a general dispensation from the no-meat rule on St Patrick’s Day which falls on a Friday. Irish Catholics in the Erie area can have their corned beef and cabbage.
GE Transportation’s Marine has received type approval certification from Bureau Veritas (BV), Paris, France, for its family of Electronic Fuel Injected, medium-speed diesel engines. “The BV type approval certifies that our 8, 12 and 16 cylinder engines are manufactured with high quality at GE’s Grove City, Pennsylvania facility,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine business in Erie, Pa.
Global Power Equipment Group (NYSE: GEG) announced the appointment of John McNaughton as Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Performance, Planning and Strategy. McNaughton has an MBA from Pepperdine University and a BS in Engineering from Gannon University in Erie.
Action begins today at the 9th annual National Christian Invitational Basketball Tournament taking place at Family First Sports Park in Erie. One of the team appearing is the Faith Christian girls basketball team which recently won their fourth straight Association of Christian School International State of Illinois championship title. Faith Christian is 32-0.
The 2006 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Elementary Songfest will be held tonight at 7 pm at Northwestern Elementary School, John Williams Ave in Albion PA. Over 180 students from 37 schools will perform in concert.

The Silberman Recital Series at Allegheny College continues with soprano Katherine Soroka and pianist Alec Chien in concert on Friday, March 10 at 7:30 pm. The event will take place in the Ford Memorial Chapel and is free and open to the public.

The McDowell Center for Performing Arts invites you to a fundraiser production of “The Irish and How They Got That Way” starring: Mike Hayes, Karen Nasca, Michael Malthaner, Jean Malthaner, and Shawn Clerkin. Young Erie Professionals are preparing to announce the 2nd Annual Generation-E Leadership Award winners. This year’s recipients will be honored on Friday, March 10, 2006, during a special event at the Avalon Hotel and Conference Center, 16 W 10th Street, in downtown Erie. A pre-gala reception will kick off the celebration at 6:30 pm, followed by the award presentation and dinner at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $35 for the semi-formal event, and attendees must purchase a ticket in advance.

Children can learn about why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Who was he really? Children can make a shamrock craft to take home with them. The event is free with Museum admission of $4 per person, free to members.
Erie Bloggers first get together is set. The Erie Bloggers will be having their get together on Thursday, March 30 at 7 pm at Panera’s in the Yorktown Plaza, 2501 West 12th Street.
Fordham University head women’s basketball coach Jim Lewis has announced his retirement. Lewis coached for 36 years including the 1970-71 season at Gannon as assistant men’s coach.
