Four Mercyhurst College freshman football players were charged with beating an Erie man outside of Peccadillo’s Bar. Facing assault charges are Theo Hall of Cincinnati, Aaron Hayes of Beachwood, Ohio, Dwayne Marshall of Trotwood, Ohio and Richard Stokes of Cincinnati. The four were suspended from the team. No word as yet if Bobby Bowden has offered them scholarships if they were to transfer to FSU.

Howard Glessner, Deputy Director of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, said that federal and state officials are investigating the Northwest Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center (NPIRC) in Erie and not his agency. North Central has had transactions with the NPIRC and that’s why investigators might have visited Jefferson County.

The blood shortage in the region WORSENED in the past 24 hours with the supply A Positive blood falling to critically low levels just like the supply of type O blood. The Erie Community Blood Bank is urgently requesting help from the community in the form of people to come and donate blood. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30 pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9 am-12:30 pm. Photo ID required.

Erie developer Tom Kennedy has finally received federal tax credits from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) for the former Meadville Junior High School. Construction should begin this Summer on creating nearly 4 dozen apartments with remodeling on another area with commercial space coming later. Mr Kennedy has been working on this project since 2003. He owns Professional Development Associates, Prudential Advantage Realty, the Renaissance Centre and related businesses in Erie.

The quick thinking of a kindergarten student and a children’s safety education program sponsored by Cellular One are being credited with saving the life of an Erie man last week. Six-year-old Jack Scully is being lauded as a hero after he used information in a Special Agent 911 coloring book to summon help after his father, Timothy, fell ill at the family home. Jack was part of a recent Special Agent 911 presentation at Belle Valley Elementary school where the mascot, along with local Cellular One staffers, taught students what to do in an emergency, how and when to dial 911 and offered demonstrations on how to dial 911 on mock wireless telephones.

The first musical Ben Agresti saw in his hometown of Erie PA was “Anything Goes” by Cole Porter. Agresti is now the director of the Camille Lightner Playhouse in Brownsville Texas. The theaters current show “Anything Goes” premieres tonight.

Perseus House partnered with the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies to create the Charter School of Excellence Maritime Center. This middle school serves approximately 60 students age 11 to 14 who may be better served in this unique educational setting. This program offers numerous experiential learning activities including boat building. The school recently sent two canoes to hurricane-stricken Jean Lafitte, La.

Mount Calvary Church at 2022 East Lake Road will hold a Lenten Ladle: A Switch from Fish dinner today, Friday March 10 from 4:30-7 pm. Dinner includes soup, tossed salad and choice of beverage. Cheese Pizza is available for the kids. Cost is $6 for adults; kids (12 and under) $4.

The Silberman Recital Series at Allegheny College continues with soprano Katherine Soroka and pianist Alec Chien in concert tonight at 7:30 pm. The event will take place in the Ford Memorial Chapel and is free and open to the public.

The McDowell Center for Performing Arts invites you to a fundraiser production of “The Irish and How They Got That Way” starring: Mike Hayes, Karen Nasca, Michael Malthaner, Jean Malthaner, and Shawn Clerkin. The play will be performed tonight at 7:30 pm at the McDowell Intermediate Little Theater, 3320 Caughey Road. Tickets are $20 each (includes cookies and punch). Phone 836-6925 for more information. Proceeds benefit new seats for the theater.

Young Erie Professionals are preparing to announce the 2nd Annual Generation-E Leadership Award winners. This year’s recipients will be honored tonight during a special event at the Avalon Hotel and Conference Center, 16 W 10th Street, in downtown Erie. A pre-gala reception will kick off the celebration at 6:30 pm, followed by the award presentation and dinner at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $35 for the semi-formal event, and attendees must purchase a ticket in advance.

The Celtic Tenors will perform tonight at 8 pm in the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets run from $15 for students to $30 for adults. The box office number is (814) 824-3000.

The Erie Playhouse Youtheatre is presenting the musical ‘Treasure Island’ tonight through March 12, 2006. For info and tickets call (814) 454-2852.

The Erie Zoo will hold their annual St Patrick’s Parade on Saturday March 11. For details call the zoo at 814-864-4091.

The Experience Erie Children’s Museum will hold a St Patrick’s Day celebration on Saturday, from 11 to 3. Wear all the green you can and be Irish for a day. Children can learn about why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Who was he really? Children can make a shamrock craft to take home with them. The event is free with Museum admission of $4 per person, free to members.

The Allegheny College Humanities Lecture Series continues this month with a presentation on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 pm in Campus Center Room 301. Professor of English Lloyd Michaels will present “‘Come and See’: Elem Klimov’s Intimate Epic.” Michaels examines the film “Come and See,” from Russian director Elem Klimov.

Fiction writer Aimee Bender will open the spring season of the Penn State Behrend Creative Writer’s Speaker Series. Bender will read from her works at 6 pm Thursday, March 16, in the college’s Smith Chapel. Her presentation is free and open to the public. A public reception will proceed the reading at 4:30 pm in the Smith Chapel living room. and the recently published Willfull Creatures.

The American presidency will be the focus of the spring 2006 Chautauqua at Gannon lecture. The speaker will be Dr Thomas Cronin, professor of American institutions and leadership at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Beyond the office of the presidency, Cronin, a renowned presidential scholar, also will address critical issues related to public leadership. The lecture will begin at 7:30 pm Tuesday, March 21 in room 104 of Zurn Science Center, 143 West Seventh Street. It is free and open to the public.

Erie Bloggers first get together is set. The Erie Bloggers will be having their get together on Thursday, March 30 at 7 pm at Panera’s in the Yorktown Plaza, 2501 West 12th Street.

Penn State-Behrend men’s basketball head coach Dave Niland is a leading candidate to take over as men’s basketball coach at Canisius College. Niland is a former Griff assistant under John Beilein. He has 219 wins and three NCAA tournament appearances in 12 years in Erie.

No 7 Mercyhurst (22-7-6) converted its first six power plays as the Lakers overpowered Robert Morris 9-0 to advance to the College Hockey America (CHA) Championship game on March 12 at 11 am. Valerie Chouinard led Mercyhurst with a hat trick. All three Mercyhurst goalies played one period on the evening for the combined shoutout.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League play a pair of home games Friday and Saturday at the Tullio Arena against the Plymouth Whalers and Kitchener Rangers respectively. Sunday the Otters wrap up the weekend in London against the Knights.

Edinboro guards Kelly Calderone and Callie Iorfido were named to the 2006 PSAC West All-League first team. Iorfido was named Athlete of the Year.

Edinboro seniors Daren Tielsch and Torry Mitchell have been named to the All-PSAC West first team.

Lafayette Senior Greg Van Volkenburg (Erie Cathedral Prep) was named to the mens’ swimming First Team All-Patriot League.

Vermont plays Albany for the America East Conference title at noon on Saturday with former Gannon assistant John Sanow (2003-05) on the bench for Vermont. Sanow is in his first year as an assistant for Vermont.

Saturday, March 11th will be the first day of individual ticket sales for Erie SeaWolves tickets. This Saturday also marks the first “Day of Hope” with the Erie SeaWolves. For each new box of cereal redeemed at Jerry Uht Park on Saturday, fans will receive a complimentary ticket to the Home Opener on April 13th. The food is given to the Erie City Mission.
