Erie PA News and Events for Saturday March 11, 2006
Two students from Erie at Penn State University Park were arrested after a really dumb prank. Corey P Thompson and Michael D Strafford were both charged with possession of alcohol and Thompson was also charged with impersonating a police officer. Thompson was a part-time auxiliary officer that could ticket cars but had no other police powers.
Thompson, while wearing his auxiliary officer uniform, busted into the room of a fellow student and said he was campus police. He said there were reports of underage drinking and he was going to confiscate any alcohol. Thompson found some beer. The kid said it was his roommates. Just then the roommate, Strafford, came into the room. The two had a beer and then a good laugh at the expense of the other student. But they laughed a little too soon. He didn’t think it was too funny for scaring the crap out of him and called the real campus police.
At McKinley Elementary School in Erie there is an experiment with single sex classes for reading and math. Half the fifth grade at the school attends single sex classes in two subjects with the other half in traditional coed classrooms. The one year project was to see if test scores improve by splitting up classes for boys and girls. The test program was funded by the Department of Education. The students were recently tested and the kids in the single sex classes classes showed the most improvement. The Erie School District is looking to expand the program next year. US students lag behind 2/3rds of all industrialized countries in math and reading skills.
