Erie PA News and Events for Sunday March 12, 2006
A small earthquake shook northeast Ohio on Saturday at 7:27 am. This was the fourth and largest quake to hit the area this year. The magnitude 3.1 was centered 5 miles NNW of Mentor-on-the-Lake, OH which is about 60 miles from Erie. There was no damage reported. The Northeast Ohio seismic zone has had moderately frequent earthquakes at least since the first one was reported in 1823. Usually earthquakes too small to cause damage are felt two or three times per decade.
First Baptist Church in North East PA is opening a youth center. They have leased a store front with 5,500 square feet and are remodeling it to include room for a study lounge, exercise area and plenty of arcade games. The center, to be called Common Ground, will be located on Main Street near the intersection of Route 89 and Route 20. It’s within walking distance from school and is aimed at young people in junior high on up through college.
North East High School won the 2006 LifeSmarts Consumer Challenge Pennsylvania state championship. Included were questions on personal finance, the environment, health and safety, technology, and consumer rights. Mount Calvary Church, 2022 East Lake Road, is holding an all you can eat pancake breakfast today, Sunday March 12. Today admission if free at the Erie Maritime Museum and the Drake Well Museum in Titusville. It’s the 325th anniversary of the Commonwealth’s founding and Pennsylvania Heritage Week.
The Allegheny College Humanities Lecture Series continues this month with a presentation on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 pm in Campus Center Room 301. Professor of English Lloyd Michaels will present “‘Come and See’: Elem Klimov’s Intimate Epic.” Michaels examines the film “Come and See,” from Russian director Elem Klimov.
The Northwest PA Maple Association Taste and Tour Weekend will be held Saturday March 18 and Sunday March 19 from 10-4 each day. There are a number of sugarhouses participating in Crawford, Erie, Venango, and Mercer counties.
Adam Farrell of Fort LeBoeuf won the 2006 PIAA Class AA wrestling championship at 215 lbs.
The West Virginia State men’s basketball team defeated Edinboro 103-89 in the NCAA Division II East Regional. Daren Tielsch had 34 and Torry Mitchell had 27 to lead Edinboro.
The University of Charleston women’s basketball team rallied for a 71-62 victory over Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in the NCAA Division II East Regional.
The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team (22-12-1, 20-8-1) broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period and went on from there to defeat Canisius 7-2 in front of over 1,200 fans Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers will travel top Worcester, Mass next weekend for the Atlantic Hockey semifinals against the winner of the Army/Bentley game.
The Miami University men’s hockey team downed Western Michigan 5-4 in overtime to clinch a berth in the CCHA Championship. Miami Freshman Justin Mercier (Erie, Pa) scored a second period goal.
Gannon University recruit Preston Harris scored 30 points and the District 10 AAAA champion Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers (22-5) made 26 of 29 free throws to beat Pittsburgh Central Catholic 77-66 at Edinboro University.
The North East High School boys basketball team krushed Keystone 72-47 in Class AA.
Jeannette defeated the Erie Mercyhurst Prep boys basketball team (21-8) 56-42 at Edinboro in Class AA.
Mike Blunden scored a goal and three assists to lead the Erie Otters to a 4-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers in an Ontario Hockey League game played in front of 3,995 at the Tullio Arena. Ryan O’Marra added a goal and two assists while Bret Nasby had a goal and an assist. Adam Berti netted the other Erie goal. The Otters close out the regular season against London on Saturday at 7:30 pm and Guelph on Sunday at 2 pm.
Walleye season on Lake Erie closes Tuesday March 14. It will reopen on May 6 after the spawning period of the fish. The creel limit will be six fish with a minimum size of 15 inches.
