Jury selection begins today in the trial of former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi. The trial will be held in Washington County, 130 miles south of Erie. Filippi and two friends are accused of using inside info to profit on a land deal. The company the three formed, Aiko Acquisition, purchased parcels near the former IP/Hammermill Paper plant. MTR Gaming was looking at that site for a race track and casino. The racino didn’t go there though, it was placed in Summit Township and is currently under construction. Baldwin Brothers agent Greg Rubino, who seems to have kept himself out of jail by being an FBI snitch, is the main witness for the prosecution
A handful of tickets were released and are now on sale for the two Jerry Seinfeld shows on Thursday at the Warner Theatre in Erie. The first show is Thursday March 16 at 7 pm and the second is at 9:30 pm.
The Allegheny College Humanities Lecture Series continues tonight at 7:30 pm in Campus Center Room 301. Professor of English Lloyd Michaels will present “‘Come and See’: Elem Klimov’s Intimate Epic.” Michaels examines the film “Come and See,” from Russian director Elem Klimov.
The Northwest PA Maple Association Taste and Tour Weekend will be held Saturday March 18 and Sunday March 19 from 10-4 each day. There are a number of sugarhouses participating in Crawford, Erie, Venango, and Mercer counties.
On Tuesday, March 14 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Erie Art Museum Director John Vanco will give a free guided tour of the museum buildings. Also remember that every Wednesday is free admission to all four Erie Art Museum galleries from 11 am to 5 pm.
Fiction writer Aimee Bender will open the spring season of the Penn State Behrend Creative Writer’s Speaker Series. Bender will read from her works at 6 pm Thursday, March 16, in the college’s Smith Chapel. Her presentation is free and open to the public. A public reception will proceed the reading at 4:30 pm in the Smith Chapel living room.
If you’d like to join the Millcreek Kiwanis Club, here’s your chance. On Monday, March 20, the Millcreek Kiwanis Club is opening its Membership Charter and is holding an evening meeting. The social begins at 5:30 pm and the meeting begins at 6:00 pm at the Blasco Library, the Admiral Room. Discover what fun it is to be a Kiwanian. Learn how they serve the Erie Community. Learn how you can become a member. Millcreek Kiwanis also meets each Wednesday morning at 7:30 am at the Avalon Hotel for a brief business meeting, informative local speaker and breakfast. Guests are always welcome.
The American presidency will be the focus of the spring 2006 Chautauqua at Gannon lecture. The speaker will be Dr Thomas Cronin, professor of American institutions and leadership at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Beyond the office of the presidency, Cronin, a renowned presidential scholar, also will address critical issues related to public leadership. The lecture will begin at 7:30 pm Tuesday, March 21 in room 104 of Zurn Science Center, 143 West Seventh Street. It is free and open to the public.
The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team received a bid to the NCAA Division I Women’sHockey Tournament. Mercyhurst will make its second straight trip to the NCAA postseason next Saturday when the 7th seeded Lakers (23-7-6) travel to 2nd seeded Wisconsin (33-4-1) for a regional game against the Badgers. The contest will be the first NCAA postseason game hosted by the Wisconsin women and will be played Saturday, March 18, at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis.
The London Knights slipped past the Erie Otters 5-4 in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 9,090 at the John Labatt Centre.
The other day I mentioned that Penn State-Behrend men’s basketball head coach Dave Niland is a leading candidate to take over as men’s basketball coach at Canisius College. Just found out that his father, Joe Niland, was the Griffs’ head coach in the 1950s. Niland was also a former Griff assistant under John Beilein.
