Erie PA News and Events for Monday March 20, 2006

Horace Hawes was a native of Danby, New York and spent a number of years in Erie PA. In Erie County, Hawes became deputy attorney general, county prosecutor and a commissioner of deeds. President Polk sent him to be the US Council for the South Seas Islands and later appointed him prefect of the District of San Francisco. Hawes was elected to represent San Francisco in the state Assembly in 1856. To help clean up San Francisco politics and clean up the corruption, he introduced the “Consolidation Act” which merged San Francisco’s city and county governments into one entity. It’s too bad he couldn’t have done the same for Erie 150 years ago. However there is a chance for two municipalities to consolidate now. Mercyhurst College will host an Erie-Millcreek merger discussion tonight. “Creating an Edge: Merging Erie and Millcreek” will take place at 7:30 pm in Zurn 114. The public is invited. The discussion will cover the debate about regional unity and what can be accomplished with a merger of the two adjacent communities, including the possibility of governmental unification, a regional light rail system, no-growth boundaries, and economic development.
