Closing arguments finish up today in the trial of former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi. It should go to the jury sometime this afternoon. One thing that will be stuck in the minds of the jurors is the line by Lenny Ambrose, Filippi’s attorney. “You know what MTR stands for? Money to Rubino.”

Randy Brewer won’t be on the ballot for the 1st Pennsylvania House legislative District. A number of signatures on his nominating petitions were questioned and he didn’t have the 300 valid signatures required.

Barry Centini, director of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, received a raise of $10,500 which puts his salary at $92,500. The average pay is $99,650 at 340 airports. Erie International Airport pays director Kelly Fredericks $150,000.

There is now a a dry cleaning ATM. Customers slide their credit or debit card into the machine, confirm their contact information, and pick the services they want. A door opens. The clothes go in and are taken by robotic arm and conveyor belt back into the store. If there are special instructions, an employee will call the customer to get that information. Pick up works the same way - insert card and the machinery will fetch the clothes. The Automated Drycleaning Delivery System is a product of HMC Solutions who has sold units to operators in Columbus Ohio, Lexington, Ky and yes, Erie PA.

For many anti-drug coalitions, it can often be challenging to involve young people in their prevention efforts. Now, a new curriculum developed by Coalition Pathways can help alleviate that problem. The program trains youth about the coalition process so they can be effective partners in the community´s drug prevention strategy. The two-phase program, called “Project Lead and Seed: the Torch of Leadership,” was designed by the Erie PA based coalition to get middle and high-school-aged youth involved in their coalition.

The Photomedia Center is seeking entries for their 2006 Juried Open Exhibition. Open to all artists internationally working in any photographic media - including collage, digital, traditional, alternative, and new media. There is no restriction on subject matter. This year’s juror is Gary Cardot. Artists may enter up to 10 pieces by CD only (no slides or prints). The 2006 prospectus and application is now available for download in pdf on their website. Entry fee is $5 per image; early entry is $3 per image if entry is received by April 22, 2006. Entry fees are waived entirely for Photomedia Center members. Postmark deadline for all entries: June 10, 2006. The musical “Brigadoon” will be performed at the Erie Playhouse tonight, March 25-26, March 29-April 2, 6-9, 2006. For tickets and times call (814) 454-2852.

Mercyhurst Prep has a production of “Hello, Dolly!” playing tonight, March 25 and April 6, 7, 8 at 7 pm as well as matinee performances March 25, 26 and April 8, 9 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $4 for students, $6 for seniors and $7 for adults.

Roadhouse Theatre will perform “Reservoir Dogs” Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm tonight through May 6. Reservations are a must for this show and can be made by phone at (814) 456-5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office, 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 pm Tuesday – Saturday. The Theatre accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Tickets remain ever affordable at the Roadhouse, $8 regular, $10 riser and $12 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5.

The Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School is hosting a parent information session tonight from 7-8 pm at Family First Sports Park. Families attending the information sessions will learn more about the school, view the curriculum, books and materials, witness a demonstration of the academic program, and find out how their child can enroll in this tuition free public school for the 2006-2007 year. All sessions are free and open to the public. The Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School (PAVCS) is a statewide public charter school that currently serves over 4,000 Pennsylvania students in grades K-9.

Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra conducted and directed by Bruce Morton Wright will perform a concert tonight. The concert will feature as soloist Bruce Gingrich (organ). The performance is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 707 Sassafras Street.

Sesame Street Live “Out of This World” is coming to the Warner Theatre tonight through Sunday. Show times are Fri 7 pm, Sat 2 pm and 5:30 pm, and Sun 2 pm. Tickets are $14 to $25. Children ages 1-12 years receive $1.50 off regular priced tickets (excluding VIP seats). Any child who has reached his or her first birthday must have a ticket.

Presque Isle State Park is a leading migratory stop for all kinds of birds. There are a number of programs on the subject scheduled at the park. On Saturday, March 25 at 8:30 am there will a hike and lecture about birding. A brief indoor program will be followed by a drive/hike to each week’s birding hot spot for some in-the-field experiences. No fee, no registration. Meet at Stull Interpretive Center.

The Gem City Jazz Ensemble will perform twice this weekend: On Saturday March 25 from noon-1 pm at the Millcreek Mall Bridal Show - Center Stage. And Sunday March 26 from 6-7 pm at St John Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St. Both shows are free and open to the public.

Because You Care animal shelter is holding their 25th anniversary dinner dance on Saturday March 25 from 7-11 pm at the St John’s Parish Center in Girard. Tickets are $25.

On Sunday, March 26, the Millcreek Kiwanis Club will be hosting its annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. The event takes place at Asbury Barn from 8 am until 2 pm. Cost is $4 with kids under two admitted free. The children can visit with the Easter bunny and participate in many activities including an indoor Easter egg hunt, face painting and arts and craft activities while the parents enjoy a pancake breakfast. Also, there will be a Chinese auction and a Bake Sale. The proceeds benefit the activities of the Millcreek Kiwanis Club.

The Silberman Recital Series continues with a performance by the Alexander String Quartet in the Ford Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:30 pm. The Quartet is made up of noted performers Zakarias Grafilo and Frederick Lifsitz, violins, Paul Yarbrough, viola and Sandy Wilson, cello. The event is free and open to the public.

Creating “heart-healthy families” is just one goal of the Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing. Toward that end, the school of nursing on Thursday, April 6 will host its annual community health fair. The event, titled “Family Fun Day: Get Up … Get Busy,” will be held from 4-7 pm at the Community Center at the John E Horan Garden Apartments, 2110 East 10th Street in Erie. A number of activities will be offered for young children, including Dino Jump, hula-hoop contests, and other games. Food and prizes also will be offered. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Villa Maria School of Nursing and the Housing Authority of the City of Erie.

The Westminster Figure Skating Club of Erie annual spring show, “A Night on Broadway on Ice” takes place at Mercyhurst College Ice Arena in Erie PA at 7 pm on Saturday, April 8, and at 2 pm on Sunday, April 9. Professional figure skater Caryn Kadavy will perform in the show to Celtic Woman’s “Nella Fantasia.” Skaters of all ages and ability levels will take part in the two-hour show, which will feature nine solo performances by advanced skaters. Groups of skaters will perform to music from popular Broadway shows like “Mamma Mia,” “A Chorus Line,” “Oliver” and “The King and I.” The club’s three synchronized skating teams will perform as well. Advance tickets can be purchased from March 15 through April 8 at Debby’s Dance & Skate Shop, 3410 W 26th St., and The Dancewear Center, 3834 Liberty St. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets for adults are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Student and senior citizen tickets are $6 each and tickets for children 12 and under are $3. Business journalist Stuart Varney will speak at Mercyhurst College Monday, April 10, as part of the college’s Walker Lecture Series. Varney appears on Fox News.

The Pittsburgh Steelers basketball team will play the Penn State Behrend Community “All-Stars” in a charity game on April 23 at 3 pm at the Behrend Junker Center. Tickets are $5. For more info call the Behrend Men’s Basketball office at (814) 898-7566.

The Erie office of Pennsylvania Career Link will hold a job and career fair, the 2006 Erie CareerFair on April 25, 2006 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Zem Zem Shrine Club, 2525 West 38th Street, Erie PA.

TravelCenters of America (TA) invites professional drivers to enter their chili recipes in the TA National Chili Cook Off. The top prize is a cool $5,000, and the winning recipe will be featured on TA restaurant menus across the country for all to savor. Entries must be received by May 15, 2006 for the regional contest which will be held at the Harborcreek (Erie) PA TravelCenters of America Center on June 3.

Shelby Chaney has transferred from Gannon to Mercyhurst. Gannon coach John Reilly screwed up and has some questions to answer. Chaney has one year of eligibility remaining.

No. 5 Mercyhurst (5-1) could not overcome three unanswered goals by No. 1 Le Moyne (3-1) in the third period, as the Dolphins took an 8-4 decision in a clash of top five teams in Rochester, N.Y.

Courtney Olevnik scored four of Mercyhurst’s first six goals as the Lakers won their third in a row by defeating Notre Dame (Ohio) by a score of 19-2.

Lafayette senior Greg Van Volkenburg (Erie Cathedral Prep) earned a spot on the Patriot League’s Swimming and Diving Class of 2006 Top 10 for his performance at the league championships in his career. Van Volkenburg will graduate with one school record on his resume, a time of 50.86 in the 100 back, and four mentions on the All-Time Top 10 at Lafayette in the 100 and 200 back, 100 free and 200 IM.
