No verdict has been reached in the trial of former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi and his friends and business partners Rolf Patberg and Eric Purhcase. The jury worked the case for about 7 hours on Friday. Deliberations will resume this morning.
Four punks aged 20 and 21 were arrested for firing hundreds of paint balls at businesses, cars and homes from upper Peach Street to the central westside of Erie. One guy who had his car hit in the parking lot of Andy’s Pub called police and followed the vandals until they were stopped by the police around 10th and Liberty Streets. These four idiots could be paying for the damage for years to come.
The late Clinton Clark has left $742,000 to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Erie. Clark, the owner of an oil company based in his hometown of Auburn, NY, died in 2004 at the age of 98. The Erie Hospital is a pediatric orthopaedic hospital providing comprehensive orthopaedic care to children at no charge. The hospital is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals throughout North America.
Mercyhurst College students have a new subject to choose from this summer – Historic Seamanship – a six-week course that will take them from the classroom to the deck and rigging of the US Brig Niagara. The course is a cooperative effort of the college and the Erie Maritime Museum. Students will receive three credits for the course as well as the opportunity to sail from Erie to Green Bay, Wisconsin. To enroll in the course, applicants need to do two things: They need to be enrolled at Mercyhurst either as a permanent student or as a transient student, and they need to meet Erie Maritime Museum requirements for volunteer crew members. Students will get the three credits.
The Rev Ron Cyktor recently began his duties as head pastor at St John Roman Catholic Church and is also serving as administrator for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, both in Connellsville PA. Cyktor graduated from Gannon University.
Northwest Savings Bank plans to open its first branch office in Rochester in June, the 13th location in its New York branch system. Northwest Savings is based in Warren PA and has 154 branches in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Maryland and Florida.
The musical “Brigadoon” will be performed at the Erie Playhouse tonight, March 26, March 29-April 2, 6-9, 2006. For tickets and times call (814) 454-2852.
Mercyhurst Prep has a production of “Hello, Dolly!” playing tonight and April 6, 7, 8 at 7 pm as well as matinee performances today, March 26 and April 8, 9 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $4 for students, $6 for seniors and $7 for adults.
Roadhouse Theatre will perform “Reservoir Dogs” Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm tonight through May 6. Reservations are a must for this show and can be made by phone at (814) 456-5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office, 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 pm Tuesday – Saturday. The Theatre accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Tickets remain ever affordable at the Roadhouse, $8 regular, $10 riser and $12 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5.
Sesame Street Live “Out of This World” is coming to the Warner Theatre today through Sunday. Show times are Sat 2 pm and 5:30 pm, and Sun 2 pm. Tickets are $14 to $25. Children ages 1-12 years receive $1.50 off regular priced tickets (excluding VIP seats). Any child who has reached his or her first birthday must have a ticket.
The Gem City Jazz Ensemble will perform twice this weekend: Today, Saturday March 25 from noon-1 pm at the Millcreek Mall Bridal Show - Center Stage. And Sunday March 26 from 6-7 pm at St John Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St. Both shows are free and open to the public.
Because You Care animal shelter is holding their 25th anniversary dinner dance tonight from 7-11 pm at the St John’s Parish Center in Girard. Tickets are $25.
On Sunday, March 26, the Millcreek Kiwanis Club will be hosting its annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. The event takes place at Asbury Barn from 8 am until 2 pm. Cost is $4 with kids under two admitted free. The children can visit with the Easter bunny and participate in many activities including an indoor Easter egg hunt, face painting and arts and craft activities while the parents enjoy a pancake breakfast. Also, there will be a Chinese auction and a Bake Sale. The proceeds benefit the activities of the Millcreek Kiwanis Club.

The Silberman Recital Series continues with a performance by the Alexander String Quartet in the Ford Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:30 pm. The Quartet is made up of noted performers Zakarias Grafilo and Frederick Lifsitz, violins, Paul Yarbrough, viola and Sandy Wilson, cello. The event is free and open to the public.
Creating “heart-healthy families” is just one goal of the Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing. Toward that end, the school of nursing on Thursday, April 6 will host its annual community health fair. The event, titled “Family Fun Day: Get Up … Get Busy,” will be held from 4-7 pm at the Community Center at the John E Horan Garden Apartments, 2110 East 10th Street in Erie. A number of activities will be offered for young children, including Dino Jump, hula-hoop contests, and other games. Food and prizes also will be offered. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Villa Maria School of Nursing and the Housing Authority of the City of Erie.
The Westminster Figure Skating Club of Erie annual spring show, “A Night on Broadway on Ice” takes place at Mercyhurst College Ice Arena in Erie PA at 7 pm on Saturday, April 8, and at 2 pm on Sunday, April 9. Professional figure skater Caryn Kadavy will perform in the show to Celtic Woman’s “Nella Fantasia.” Skaters of all ages and ability levels will take part in the two-hour show, which will feature nine solo performances by advanced skaters. Groups of skaters will perform to music from popular Broadway shows like “Mamma Mia,” “A Chorus Line,” “Oliver” and “The King and I.” The club’s three synchronized skating teams will perform as well. Advance tickets can be purchased from March 15 through April 8 at Debby’s Dance & Skate Shop, 3410 W 26th St., and The Dancewear Center, 3834 Liberty St. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets for adults are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Student and senior citizen tickets are $6 each and tickets for children 12 and under are $3. The Franklin High School boy’s basketball team won the Pennsylvania Class AAA Championship last night defeating Communications Tech of Philadelphia 74-63. Nate Byham had 22 points and four rebounds while Jude Urda had 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Byham is going to Pitt on a football scholarship. Urda is being recruited by Gannon University and IUP.
The Double-A Erie Seawolves and the city of Erie announced a lease extension that will keep the Tigers affiliate in its current home through at least 2008. The deal puts an end to lengthy speculation that the franchise could move anywhere from Massachusetts to the Midwest. As part of the agreement, Jerry Uht Park will undergo renovations and capital improvements, including a new center-field scoreboard costing $1 million and a picnic and party area in right field. The new lease, coincidentally, runs as long as the Tigers’ working agreement with the franchise. The Tigers extended their agreement last September.
Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya were named to the Detroit Tigers opening day roster. Both pitched for the Erie SeaWolves last year. Verlander, 23, earned the job as Detroit’s fifth starter and Zumaya, 21, will have a spot in the bullpen.
The Erie Freeze travel to Huntington, WV to play the Huntington Heroe tonight at 7 pm. The two top standing teams in the AIFL Northern Conference, Huntington 2-0 and Erie 3-0, will face off vying for lone possession of first place.
Louis Batista of Erie Lower East Side Federation earned a Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves championship in the Intermediate 138 weight class. The state finals will be held April 8 at Heinz Field.
The Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League announced that right wing Michael Blunden has been signed to an amateur tryout contract (ATO). In 60 games with the Erie Otters (OHL) this season, Blunden posted 46 goals and 38 assists for 84 points with 63 PIM.
Rockford IceHogs of the United Hockey League club signed Andrew Hotham to a contract. The 6’-2”, 205lb defenseman played for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League this season. In 60 games, the 19-year old blue-liner netted 10g-39a-49pts. His point total was tops among all Otters defenseman and good enough for fourth most on the club.
In his first professional start, former Erie Otters goaltender Josh Disher stopped 39 of 44 shots in a 5-2 Albany loss to the Philadelphia Phantoms.
The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have signed rookie forward Chase Trull. Trull recently completed his collegiate career at NCAA Division I St Lawrence University. Trull enrolled at St Lawrence following a brief stint with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.
