Erie PA News and Events for Sunday March 26, 2006
Former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi, his former campaign manager, Eric Purchase; and law partner, Rolf Patberg were found not guilty of all charges in their public corruption case. The case did what it intended to do. It got Filippi out of office. The charges were filed two months before the primary in which Filippi finished fourth out of five candidates. The moral of the story is don’t rock the boat. Don’t come up with any ideas that the old boys political network in Erie doesn’t agree with.
The main witness in the case was former used car salesman and Baldwin Brother broker Greg Rubino who has stayed out of jail himself on more than one occasion by cooperating with the FBI. Rubino would has stood to make millions if Filippi would had agreed to a $50 million subsidy (kickback) to MTR Gaming for the building of the race track and slots casino at the former IP/Hammermill Paper plant in the city of Erie.
Former Iowa cornerback Jovon Johnson of Erie PA was named as one person who received cellular phone benefits during an unemployment compensation appeal hearing for Jeremy Reed who was fired from IPCS Wireless in January.
