In 1955, Delta Tau Delta at Allegheny College accepted two ‘social members’ into membership. This was against the franternity charter. The alumni association said that if they didn’t change their decision, that they would close down the house. The alumni association realized they would be saddled with mortgage payments indefinitely. Seeking a face-saving way of doing so, they agreed with the position and invited a celebrity guest to come and seal the deal. The guest was an alumni member of the fraternity at Ohio Wesleyan University. He was Branch Rickey. At the time, Rickey was general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Branch Rickey was an innovative Major League Baseball executive who is best known for helping break baseball’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson and creating the framework to the modern minor league farm system.
