Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday April 4, 2006

Posted by Dennis on April 4, 2006

There is a possibility that Randy Brewer’s name could be returning to the ballot for the Spring primary for the1st Legislative District seat in the Pennsylvania State Assembly. Approximately 40 names on his nominating petition were challenged and he is appealing. Even his own signature was challenged. He signed his name Randy Brewer. The name he registered under was Randolph Brewer. Every Bill instead of William and Tom instead of Thomas were tossed. That’s being a little too picky.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen published an article today with Jovon Johnson saying he had nothing to do with the cell phones for Outback Bowl tickets scandal. Johnson, an all Big 10 selection at cornerback, said he bought his phone years ago before Jeremy Reed ever worked at Sprint IPCS. Reed was fired from the Sprint store and said he gave cell phones and free services in exchange for tickets.

A rare Lincoln Cent/Dime “Mule” that was found in Erie will be offered at auction. In the parlance of numismatists, a “mule” is “a coin or note with a mismatched obverse and reverse.” This may mean different types, different denominations, or even different countries. It is an exceptionally rare error, and specimens of this type are exceptionally prized by collectors. (Cripe who wrote this crap.) “Shortly after this phenomenon dropped from the mismatched dies,” said Greg Rohan, President of Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries, “it was discovered in Erie, Pennsylvania by someone who found the coin in a roll of 1999 cents obtained from a local bank. The discoverer then sold the piece to Dempsey and Baxter, a local jewelry store. Dempsey and Baxter held onto the piece until the present consignor ‘made them an offer they couldn’t refuse’ in 2003. The consignor had hoped to surprise his father with the coin as a Christmas gift; however, his father unexpectedly died on October 2 of that year, several days before the coin was actually to be purchased. The consignor went ahead and bought the coin after his father’s death and kept it alongside his other double-denomination errors.”
