Erie PA News and Events for Monday April 10, 2006

In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Black Knight wanted to continue to fight even though he had lost both arms and legs. King Arthur said “What are you gonna do, bleed on me”? This sounds like what’s happening in Erie with members of United Auto Workers Local 832 and Steris Corporation.
Steris is moving their manufacturing operations to Mexico in a cost cutting move. The company offered workers a severance package of 10 to 18 weeks of pay and perks which averaged $15,000 per person. On Sunday, union workers voted to turn down the offer by more than a 9-1 margin. Voicing your displeasure is one thing. Turning down the money is another. What are they going to do, go on strike? The company is moving. Why battle when the war is over. All they have done is cost their families money and hurt their chances of getting other jobs.

Today is Commodore Perry Day. No the other one. This day is for Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, famous for his command which opened then isolationist Japan, ulitimately leading to a treaty with the Convention of Kanagawa with Japan in March of 1854. He is the younger brother of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the Battle of Lake Erie.

The Erie SeaWolves (1-3) beat Harrisburg 3-0. Preston Larrison didn’t allow a hit or a walk in five innings and the bullpen didn’t blow this one. In the 4 game series against the Senators, Erie starters only gave up 1 run but relievers gave up 15 in 13 2/3 innings.
