A Faded Love by Goran Rahim

Erie East High School grad Goran Rahim is now a published author. His book of poems is titled “A Faded Love”.
Rahim was was born just miles outside the Kurdish city of Kirkuk, Iraq. He was 5 when Saddam Hussein began killing ethnic Kurds. His family fled to Pakistan. At age 16 his family resettled in Erie PA as refugees. Writing poetry helped him learn English. Rahim went on to became editor of the literary publication at East, where he graduated in 2003. He has finished two years of college and plans to transfer to George Mason University or Marymount University in the fall to study international affairs. Rahim wants to go to law school and become a diplomat.

The Scranton Times ran a story today about the federal lawsuit Erby Conley filed. Conley is is a finalist for Easton’s new police commissioner job. He is suing is the City of Erie, Controller Cas Kwitowski and the four members of Erie City Council that voted not to pay him and eliminate his position.

Brigadier General (ret) Wilson C Cooney notified Erie Indemnity Company (Nasdaq: ERIE) of his decision to remove his name from the slate of nominees for election to the Board of Directors of Erie Indemnity Company and its affiliated companies. General Cooney was born in 1934 in Philadelphia. The Annual Shareholders’ Meeting of the Erie Indemnity Company is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, 2006 in Erie.

The Community Blood Bank held the 39th annual Donor Dinner at the Belle Aire in Erie last night. This year’s dinner theme wass “You hold the Key”, perfect for the blood donors who save lives in our community everyday. The event is held to recognize those people who give so selflessly to the community by giving blood. Those being honored all met a Milestone in blood donations: 5,10,15, 20 and so on up to 80 gallons were honored. Donor Chair People (those who coordinate blood drives at there place of business or other community location) will also be recognized for their efforts to keep the local blood supply safe. In 2005, over 36,000 units of blood and blood products were transfused in Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York. Chances are 1 in 3 that a person will need blood in his or her lifetime, yet chances are only 1 in 33 that a person is a blood donor.

Tom Ridge, a Harvard grad, will present a lecture titled “The Best Prize in Life” at 6 pm Wednesday, April 19 at Princeton. The speech’s title refers to a quote from Theodore Roosevelt that Ridge has often cited in speaking to college audiences: “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

Molly Brannigan’s is preparing for a mid-July opening in Scranton. The Erie Based chain has locations in Erie, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Mesa, Ariz.

Rob Saper, a recent graduate of Gannon University who is on a year’s service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, is featured in a half-hour documentary called “The Milwaukee Jesuits” by broadcast journalist Mark Siegrist which aired on WMVS-TV.in Milwaukee.

The Erie SeaWolves lost to Bowie 9-3 in their home opener in front of nearly 4,100 fans. The two teams play again today at 6:30 pm at Jerry Uht Park in Erie.

Kristin Schalk, of Watkins Memorial on Ohio, signed a lettter of intent to play softball at Gannon University. Schalk was accepted into Gannon’s 3+4 physical therapy program - 3 years undergrad and 4 years of doctorate work.

The Erie Runners Club 5K Poker Run/Walk will be held April 15 at 9 am at Beach 1 at Presque Isle State Park.

The Annual Spring Egg-venture Egg Hunt at the Erie Zoo will be held Saturday, April 15th from 10 am until 2 pm. The event is open to children ages 11 and under and will be held on the Zoo grounds. Children will be grouped according to age to ensure that all children find one egg to redeem for a prize, courtesy of Burger King. Each child will also receive a sweet Easter treat from Erie’s own Romolo Chocolates. The Egg Hunt is included with regular Zoo admission - $6.50 for adults ages 12 and over, children ages 3-11 are $3, and kids ages 2 & under are free. The Hunt is free for Erie Zoo members.

The social begins at 5:30 pm and the meeting begins at 6:00 pm at the Blasco Library, the Admiral Room. Discover what fun it is to be a Kiwanian. Learn how they serve the Erie Community. Learn how you can become a member. Millcreek Kiwanis also meets each Wednesday morning at 7:30 am at the Avalon Hotel for a brief business meeting, informative local speaker and breakfast. The Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, Gamma Theta chapter will host the Fourth annual Mr and Ms Penn State Behrend Pageant on Wednesday, April 19, at 8 pm in McGarvey Commons at the Reed Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted in advance and at the door. Checks can be made payable to Alpha Sigma Tau, 5091 Station Rd, Erie, PA 16563.

The Allegheny College Playshop Theatre will present “Tartuffe” on April 20, 21, and 22 at 8 pm and April 23 at 2:30 pm in Arter Hall on the Allegheny College campus. Beginning at 2 pm and immediately preceding the performance on April 23 will be an event called the “Groovy 1960s Fashion Show,” featuring men’s and women’s fashions spanning that colorful decade.

5th annual Northwestern Pennsylvania Autism Society of America Walk for Autism
The 5th annual Northwestern Pennsylvania Autism Society of America Walk for Autism will be held on Saturday, April 22 at Presque Isle State Park. Registration begins at 10 am with the walk starting at 11 am from Beach 1. You can print out a Walk Registration Form from here.

A Muslim imam will deliver a guest lecture at Gannon University on Bosnian assimilation and immigration into the United States. The lecture, to be given by Senad Agic, imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago in Northbrook, Ill., will be held at 7 pm Saturday, April 22, in room 101 of Gannon’s Zurn Science Center, 143 West Seventh St. The International Institute of Erie is supporting the event, which also will feature Bosnian music and folk dancing. It’s time for bird lovers to pack their binoculars, note books and field guides, because the endangered piping plover and the brilliant scarlet tanager, as well as hundreds of other colorful migrating bird species, will be showing off their feathers at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA, during National Wildlife Week (Apr 22-30). Presque Isle State Park is one of the nation’s premier bird watching destinations. The 3,200 acre sandy peninsula arches into Lake Erie and features approximately 320 species of birds in six distinct ecological zones, each with a different plant and animal community.

The Erie office of Pennsylvania Career Link will hold a job and career fair, the 2006 Erie CareerFair on April 25, 2006 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Zem Zem Shrine Club, 2525 West 38th Street, Erie PA.

The Tony Award and Pulitzer prize winning Broadway musical ‘Rent’ plays the Warner Theatre in Erie on Apr 26. Some tickets are still available.

Critically acclaimed historian Thomas Fleming, author of a dozen books on the American Revolution and a distinguished historical novelist, will speak on “Washington’s Secret War” Wednesday, April 26, at 7 pm in Walker Recital Hall at Mercyhurst College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dashboard Confessional will play a concert at Gannon University on Thursday, April 27 at 8 pm at Gannon’s Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row. Tickets for the general public are priced at $15 and can be purchased at the front desk of Gannon’s Waldron Center, 124 West Seventh Street.
