The Pennsylvania Superior Court ruled against surrogate mother Danielle Bimber and is ordering her to turn over the three children to James Flynn. This reverses the ruling by Erie County Judge Shad Connelly. The triplets were born on November of 2003 and Bimber has had them since that time. The court blamed both Bimber and Hamot Medical Center for causing this mess.

Happy Earth Day. Lets make sure no more rivers catch fire like the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland did in 1969.

Dennis Madonna and his business partner J Bradley Jones, a native of Erie, died in a helicopter crash on Friday. Both men had had successful business careers as trucking-industry executives and recently purchased Regal Heir Farms, a 160 stall thoroughbred horse farm. The farm is home to former Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Real Quiet and other pedigree breeding horses. Jones was born and raised on a farm in Erie, where he had ridden and cared for horses.

Dr Donald Ratchford has been named medical director of Cambria County’s nursing home Laurel Crest. Ratchford is a graduate of Gannon University in Erie and Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia.

This morning, more than 100 Gannon University students will participate in the university’s annual United Way Day of Caring. The work sites will be: L’Arche, Rose Home, 1028 West 9th Street; Hospitality, 337 East 8th Street; Central City Neighborhood Watch (cleanup between East 21st and 26th streets and Holland and Parade streets); Neighborhood Art House, 201 East 10th Street; Hispanic American Council, 554 East 10th Street; Mercy Center for Women, 1039 East 27th Street; CALL, cleaning up and beautifying Emerson-Gridley Park (with students from Emerson-Gridley School); International Institute of Erie, 517 East 26th Street; and ExpERIEnce Children Museum, 420 French Street.

Furniture maker American Drew announced the introduction of a new 20 piece 18th century themed collection called Edinboro.

Two men from Erie have joined the ranks of the Pennsylvania State Police following graduation from the State Police Academy in Hershey. David E Guianen and Kyle A Tobin were assigned to Troop H in Harrisburg.

The Binghamton Mets beat the Erie SeaWolves 8-4. Erie (6-10) did all of its scoring in the third. Juan Francia led off the frame with a single off Evan MacLane. After Tony Giarratano bunted his way on, Brent Clevlen singled up the middle, scoring Francia. Kurt Airoso then tied the score at four with a three-run blast. Saturday, the B-Mets play the third game of their four-game series with Erie. Miguel Perez (1-0, 2.12) will get the ball for Binghamton against Humberto Sanchez (0-1, 1.69) of Erie. Game time is 1:30 pm.

Altoona Area High School boys’ basketball coach Kraig Hetz has been named the new boys basketball coach of McDowell High School. Hetz is a Fairview grad and his old high school coach Terry Thompson is going to be his assistant.

The Erie Illusion Women’s Football Team (1-0) plays at Columbus tonight at 7 pm.

The Erie Freeze indoor football team plays at Syracuse today.

Students from four area colleges, Gannon University, Mercyhurst College, Penn State Erie, The Behrend College and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, will vie for $15,000 in prizes at the first Real Deal college business plan competition, being held from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm today at the HO Hirt Auditorium, part of the Blasco Memorial Library and Maritime Museum complex. The event is open to the public.

After winter storms pummel the beaches and bring debris, Presque Isle State Park needs your help to get the beaches ready for summer. The 50th annual Presque Isle Spring Cleanup will take place today. Volunteers for the day will receive a commemorative patch, lunch, and a chance at some great door prizes. No fee. Registration required, call the park office at (814) 833-7424. Meet at Rotary Pavilion on Presque Isle State Park at 9 am.

5th annual Northwestern Pennsylvania Autism Society of America Walk for Autism
The 5th annual Northwestern Pennsylvania Autism Society of America Walk for Autism will be held today at Presque Isle State Park. Registration begins at 10 am with the walk starting at 11 am from Beach 1. You can print out a Walk Registration Form from here.

Pat Monahan pays a visit to his hometown with Train playing a concert at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena tonight. A few tickets might still be available.

A Muslim imam will deliver a guest lecture at Gannon University on Bosnian assimilation and immigration into the United States. The lecture, to be given by Senad Agic, imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago in Northbrook, Ill., will be held at 7 pm tonight in room 101 of Gannon’s Zurn Science Center, 143 West Seventh St. The International Institute of Erie is supporting the event, which also will feature Bosnian music and folk dancing. It’s time for bird lovers to pack their binoculars, note books and field guides, because the endangered piping plover and the brilliant scarlet tanager, as well as hundreds of other colorful migrating bird species, will be showing off their feathers at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA, during National Wildlife Week (Apr 22-30). Presque Isle State Park is one of the nation’s premier bird watching destinations. The 3,200 acre sandy peninsula arches into Lake Erie and features approximately 320 species of birds in six distinct ecological zones, each with a different plant and animal community.

United We Stand Theater Troupe production of “All Over Town” is being performed at St Patrick’s Cauley Auditorium, 215 East 4th Street in Erie, tonight, Fri-Sat, 4/28-4/29, Fri-Sat, 5/5-5/6 and Fri, 5/12.

Mark Steensland, director of “The Last Way out” and “The Gospel According to Philip K Dick” is holding open auditions for multiple roles in “Beyond the Pale”, a new short film series in the tradition of “The Twilight Zone” now being webcast from Channel99.org. Auditions will be held at the Erie Playhouse Rehersal Hall, 919 State Street on Sunday April 23 from 3-5 pm and Monday Apil 24 from 7-9 pm. Sides will be provided.

The Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers basketball team will play the Penn State Behrend Community All-Stars in a charity game on April 23 at 3 pm at the Behrend Junker Center. Tickets are $5. Allegheny College will celebrate Founder’s Day, officially established in 1908 to celebrate the College’s past, present and future, on April 24, 2006. A ceremony commemorating the day will take place at noon in the Campus Center lobby. The ceremony will begin with a welcome by President Richard Cook and include selected readings by students, a senior class gift presentation, a presentation of a Founder’s Day drawing, and the singing of the Alma Mater. The celebration will conclude with a large birthday cake. The celebration is free and open to the public.

The Erie office of Pennsylvania Career Link will hold a job and career fair, the 2006 Erie CareerFair on April 25, 2006 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Zem Zem Shrine Club, 2525 West 38th Street, Erie PA.

The concert choir at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will observe Holocaust Remembrance Day with a performance of “Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps.” Cellist Jacqueline Black will join pianist Debbie Hayes to accompany the Behrend choir. The concert will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, April 25, in the Smith Chapel. It is free and open to the public.

Ewabo brings the sweet sounds of the islands to Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, for the final presentation in this year’s Rhythms of Life cultural series. The country’s preeminent steel orchestra will give a free performance at the college from noon until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25. They will appear in Bruno’s Café in the Reed Union Building; listeners are encouraged to purchase or bring a lunch to enjoy.

The Tony Award and Pulitzer prize winning Broadway musical ‘Rent’ plays the Warner Theatre in Erie on Apr 26. Some tickets are still available.

Critically acclaimed historian Thomas Fleming, author of a dozen books on the American Revolution and a distinguished historical novelist, will speak on “Washington’s Secret War” Wednesday, April 26, at 7 pm in Walker Recital Hall at Mercyhurst College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Andy Dick and Marshall Cook will be at Edinboro for the for the East and North coast premiere of their new movie “Danny Roane: First Time Director” on Thursday April 27. Tickets are free for Edinboro students and $6.50 for the general public. Doors at 7:30 pm at the Louis C Cole Memorial Auditorium with the film starting at 8:30 pm.

Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba along with Ben Lee will play a concert at Gannon University on Thursday, April 27 at 8 pm at Gannon’s Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row. Tickets for the general public are priced at $15 and can be purchased at the front desk of Gannon’s Waldron Center, 124 West Seventh Street.
