Sr Claudia is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament grade school, Villa Maria Academy, Villa Maria College (now a school of Gannon University), and Xavier University where she earned her Master’s in Education. A group of Mercyhurst College students will bring solar energy to the campus next year thanks to a grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund of Central-Eastern Pennsylvania. With a grant of up to $15,000 plus matching funds from the college, science students next year will work on a project to provide a steady supply of three kilowatts of solar power to the Mercyhurst campus. Dr Ronald Brown, associate professor of chemistry and chair of Mercyhurst’s chemistry and physics department, explained that the college will install a solar array on the campus capable of providing enough electricity to power three homes for a year. That electricity will be made part of the power grid so that if Mercyhurst is not using the electricity, it would be sold to the grid. Brown credited Dr Mike Campbell, Dr Chris Magoc and Cathy Pedler for securing the SEF grant for Mercyhurst on relatively short notice.

Mercyhurst College is being credited with laying the foundation for a sister city relationship between the City of Erie and Dungarvan, Ireland. Officials of the two communities are exploring an affiliation that could be realized as early as this summer. Erie currently shares sister city status with Zibo, China, and Lublin, Poland. The prospective Erie-Dungarvan connection would also link Erie County and County Waterford, where Dungarvan is the county seat.
