That's assuming they even have computers, let alone Internet access. The only time I saw a computer while at Central, was for the typing class. Oh, and there was that really old and dusty MAC that the school paper got to use.
I was astonished to find out that my younger brother was not only issued a computer at Prep, but it is also a Tablet PC. I was lucky to be issued a pencil and paper.

As a former newspaperwoman, I agree completely w/ your aside about using the Internet to learn about current events. The only reason they're using newspapers is b/c the ETN is sponsoring this thing. I read a whole lot more news online than I ever read in newspapers (and I grew up "reading the paper"). I get a variety of viewpoints instead of just one and I get a lot of in-depth news that's not given much coverage in mainstream media.
That being said, reading is reading and anything that gets kids reading instead of cramming for standardized testing is okay by me.

When I was in 11th grade at Strong Vincent (1997), they were just starting to get Internet access. I didn't know much about networking, but I knew a bit about the wiring. We were in the computer lab, and the 'net connection wasn't working at all. I went and looked at the switch they had, and plugged in a few cables, and ended up plugging in the WAN connection in the right jack. WHAMO, let there be Internet.
Later that day I got yelled at for what I did. I told the guy that all I did was fix the connection and he said something about how it wasn't supposed to be hooked up yet. Well, if you're paying for the access, why not hook it up? (They already had that shitty Bess browser security software installed anyways).
I hope the Erie School District's network doesn't blow as much as it used to.
