Conneaut Lake Park has layed-off all employees and may not reopen. The park needs $250,000 to open for the season. The park, whci first opend in 1892, is owned by a public trust.

The Erie Plastics plant in Corry is adding 35 jobs with the shift of production from their plant in Westborough, Mass. In 2001, Erie Plastics moved from a 156,000 sq ft plant to one with 465,000 square feet. They’ve got some extra space to fill.

Highmark Blue Cross/ Blue Shield has purchased Eye Care Centers of America for $305 million. Eye Care Centers currently operates 384 stores in 36 states but only one store in Pennsylvania, in the Millcreek Mall in Erie.

The Keystone School District has named Dr Jean Atkins Gool as district superintendent. Gool has undergraduate and master’s degrees from Gannon University, a master’s in school administration from Edinboro and her doctorate from Widener.

The Batavia Concrete batch plant in northern Illinois has added a Monitor Technologies Flexar guided wave radar continuous level measurement system. Batavia Concrete uses a multiple compartment batch plant manufactured by Erie Strayer of Erie, PA.

The Altoona Curve snapped their two-game skid in Erie, defeating the Erie SeaWolves 5-1 before a crowd of 3,631 on buck night. The Curve and SeaWolves continue their series Tuesday night at 6:35 at Jerry Uht Park.

Hockey Canada announced that Erie Otters forward Mike Blunden was among five 2006 Canadian World Junior Team members selected as preparation players for Team Canada as they get set for the 2006 IIHF Men’s World Championship being held in Riga, Latvia from May 5th-21st.

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Laker Alumni basketball game which is scheduled for September 9. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association in Erie. The kick-off party for the Epilepsy Foundation of Western/Central PA 4th Annual Erie SeaWolves Run/Walk for Epilepsy will be held today, Tuesday, May 2nd, 5:30 pm at the Palace Business Centres, 915 State Street.

Barbie Live in Fairytopia will have three performances at the Warner Theater in Erie. Shows are scheduled for Wednesday May 3 at 7 pm and Thursday May 4 at 3:30 pm and 7 pm.

The musical “South Pacific” will is playing the Erie Playhouse May 4-7. Performances times are Wed-Sat 7:30 pm and Sunday 2 pm. For tickets call 814-454-2852.

James Taylor will play in concert on Fri, May 5 at the Warner Theatre. Some tickets are still available.

The Mercyhurst College Political Science Department hosts Stafford T Thomas, professor emeritus of political science at California State University, Chico, who will lecture Friday, May 5, at 7 pm in Walker Recital Hall. His talk is free and open to the public.

The Erie Art Museum 3rd Annual Environmental Art Fair opens May 5 and runs through the end of June. The fair will focus on the theme of the built environment with an exhibit of photographs of New Orleans by Michael A Smith and participation of local school groups and artists.

Join the international celebration of Astronomy Day when Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosts guided astronomical viewing of Jupiter, Saturn, stars, nebulae, galaxies and the moon. This special evening of star-gazing will begin at 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 6, and continue until 11 pm in the field behind the Otto Behrend Science Building. Viewing will take place from the college’s Mehalso Observatory and through the telescopes of the Erie County Mobile Observers Group, whose members will be on hand to assist and answer questions. The viewing is free and open to the public. It is geared to all ages and experience levels, including children.

As part of the Erie Broadway Series, “Cats” is playing the Warner Theater on May 9 - 10.

Lake Erie Speedway will open on Friday May 12.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm May 12th - July 8th (no shows Memorial Day weekend). Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814.456.5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.

The 14th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is Saturday, May 13. Proceeds benefit the which distributes to 245 agencies in the region.

Sonya Kitchell will perform at the Mercyhurst College Walker Recital Hall on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30 pm. For tickets call the box office at (814) 824-3000.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival will be held in Edinboro May 19-21.

The Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force 4th annual Bike Around the Bay will be held in Erie, PA on May 20, 2006. Enjoy Erie’s bay and lakeshore as you bike 10, 30 or 50 miles around scenic Presque Isle State Park and bayside vistas. Check out the new Tom Ridge Environmental Center on your route. Funds raised benefit the Earth Force program serving 2,500 youth in western Pennsylvania. Bring the entire family. Grand prize: Cannondale bike and tag-a-long.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.
