The Erie County Fair will take place this year. A deal was worked out with Northwest Savings Bank to extend the deadline for the mortgage on the property to November. The fair willl take place August 27 through September 2.
Pennsylvania has confirmed eight mumps cases so far including cases in Erie County. The national total so far this year is 2,059 cases. The outbreak is likely linked to college students who became infected while traveling abroad last year.
Mercyhurst College and Stairways Behavioral Health will present an exhibit of the works of the late Moshe Lifshen at the Cummings Art Gallery on the Mercyhurst campus. The exhibit, “Moshe Lifshen: A Life Remembered, A Tribute Exhibit of Paintings, Drawings and Poetry,” will run from May 11-19. An opening reception will take place Sunday, May 14, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Moshe Lifshen, the son of Rabbi Leonard and Faith Lifshen of Erie, died Dec 18, 2004. He was 34. He suffered from schizophrenia. The gallery is located at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 2 to 5 pm and Thursday from 7 to 9 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Erie SeaWolves beat Harriburg 8-3. Kurt Airoso led off the sixth inning with his league leading seventh home run of the season and Brent Clevlen sent a bomb over the centerfield wall for his second home run of the season.
The Erie Illusion women’s football team travels down I-79 to play the Pittsburgh Passion.
The Erie Freeze indoor football team is on the road to play Stubenville.
Eriez Speedway opens this Sunday May 7th. Coors will be the inaugural sponsor for Bobby Rohrer’s Eriez Speedway. Rohrer is the new owner and along with volunteers and crew has been furiously working on the facility in preparation for opening night. Though the official Grand Opening is not scheduled until June 25th Rohrer and crew have made a large number of changes which should be very evident this Sunday. Green flag drops at 6 pm on Sunday with all gates opening at 4:30 pm.
The Denison women’s softball team advanced to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Sophomore Bri Scrofano (Erie, Pa/McDowell) fired a complete game one-hitter leading the Big Red to the 3-run win against Wittenberg.
Erie Strong Vincent WR/DB Maurice Williams is taking part in the NIKE Football Camp today at State College. The 6’3” 190 lbs athlete who runs a 40 in 4.47 is being recruited by Penn State, Pitt, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Connecticut and Georgia Tech.
The musical “South Pacific” will is playing the Erie Playhouse tonight through May 7. Performances times are Wed-Sat 7:30 pm and Sunday 2 pm. For tickets call 814-454-2852.
Join the international celebration of Astronomy Day when Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosts guided astronomical viewing of Jupiter, Saturn, stars, nebulae, galaxies and the moon. This special evening of star-gazing will begin at 7:30 pm tonight and continue until 11 pm in the field behind the Otto Behrend Science Building. Viewing will take place from the college’s Mehalso Observatory and through the telescopes of the Erie County Mobile Observers Group, whose members will be on hand to assist and answer questions. The viewing is free and open to the public. It is geared to all ages and experience levels, including children.
As part of the Erie Broadway Series, “Cats” is playing the Warner Theater on May 9 - 10.
Lake Erie Speedway will open on Friday May 12.
The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm May 12th - July 8th (no shows Memorial Day weekend). Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814.456.5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.
The 14th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is Saturday, May 13. Proceeds benefit the which distributes to 245 agencies in the region.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival will be held in Edinboro May 19-21.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.
