Fullington Trailways is cancelling their DuBois to Erie and return trip to Clarion effective July 1 due to low ridership. Fullington/Greyhound is based in Clearfield.
Jessica Meeker is looking for a job in Erie. She is looking to work at Hot Topic or Papa Johns. Meeker could be running either of those companies in a year or two. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Penn State in 2004 and will graduate with an MBA from IUP this week. The 18 years old entered college at age 12.
Jack Robinson was recently awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award presented to him by the Federal Aviation Administration for 50 years of safe flying. His closest call came in Erie. As his DC-9 took off, a fan blade broke off causing the engine to disintegrate. He piloted the US Airways plane safely back to Erie International Airport.
Gannon University awarded 528 degrees at its Spring Commencement exercises held Saturday at Tullio Arena. The graduates included 22 students receiving associate’s degrees, 333 students receiving bachelor’s degrees, 155 students receiving master’s degrees, and 17 students receiving doctoral degrees. One student graduated with a post master’s certificate.
The Greater Erie Board of Realtors released sales figures for Erie County on which a transfer tax was paid. In April 2006, 409 properties were sold for $46,385,426. Last year, 487 properties changed hands. Sales figures include residential houses, commercial properties and land. Ed Lett is president and chief executive officer of TIB Financial Corp, the holding company of TIB Bank. As of March 31,TIB had $1.2 billion in total assets. He is a second generation banker as his dad was a banker in Erie, Pa for 42 years.
The Erie Otters selected Toronto Red Wings defenseman Mitch Gaulton with the fourth overall pick in the 2006 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection held Saturday via the Internet and Conference call. In the third round, with back to back selections, the Otters took Markham Waxers left wing Kelly Geoffrey 44th overall and Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs defenseman Brian Shaw at 45.
The Erie SeaWolves won again. Kody Kirkland’s three-run homer in the sixth inning powered visiting Erie to a 5-2 victory over Harrisburg on Saturday. Kelly Hunt his a solo homerun for the SeaWolves.
The Gannon softball team was eliminated from the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to eventual champion Grand Valley State in the loser’s bracket. he Lady Knights now await word on a possible NCAA Division II Tournament bid. The announcement and possible second consecutive NCAA appearance will be announced Monday, May 8.
Dave Patronik of Gannon University was runner-up at the Great Lakes Super Regional at Prairie Bluff Golf Course in Lockport, Ill.
Freshman Katie Willow (Erie, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) finished first in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.54 at the Penn State Open. She competes next weekend at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
The Erie Freeze (8-2) crushed Steubenville 61-18. The Freeze return home Friday night against Reading.
The Erie Illusion women’s football team were pounded by the Pittsburgh Passion 45-0.
The Nationwide Tour event in Findley Lake, NY, will now be known as the Peek’n Peak Classic. The tournament will return to the area for the fifth consecutive year June 26-July 2. In addition to the name change, the tournament announced that it will offer a substantially increased purse from 2005. The new purse will be $560,000, which is an $110,000 increase over last year. The winner of the tournament will now receive a first-place check of $100,800. The top prize will make the Peek’n Peak Classic one of 12 tournaments on the Nationwide Tour to offer a six-figure payday to the winner. Peek’n Peak is about 20 minutes from Erie.
The musical “South Pacific” will is playing the final performance at the Erie Playhouse today. Performances time is 2 pm. For tickets call 814-454-2852.
Eriez Speedway opens today. Coors will be the inaugural sponsor for Bobby Rohrer’s Eriez Speedway. Rohrer is the new owner and along with volunteers and crew has been furiously working on the facility in preparation for opening night. Though the official Grand Opening is not scheduled until June 25th Rohrer and crew have made a large number of changes which should be very evident this Sunday. Green flag drops at 6 pm on Sunday with all gates opening at 4:30 pm.
As part of the Erie Broadway Series, “Cats” is playing the Warner Theater on May 9 - 10.
Lake Erie Speedway will open on Friday May 12.
The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm May 12th - July 8th (no shows Memorial Day weekend). Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. The 14th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is Saturday, May 13. Proceeds benefit the which distributes to 245 agencies in the region.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.
The Tom Ridge Environmental Center will open May 26th. This $31 million, state-of-the-art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.
