Nice job by Laura Gray of WJET-TV updating the progress at the East Erie Turners (no website). Dave Stevens of the Dave Stevens Big Band (website expired) and his business partner purchased the building and are modernizing the decor. It looked pretty good. I was under the impression that it would be open to the public but you will still need a membership to the private social club. I’m going over this week to get a membership. I’ll let you know how easy or painful the process was.
Jovon Johnson of Erie is dead serious about making the NFL. He’s now got his own website. The Steelers said they were going to sign him but they never did. He will now being going to the Jets mini-camp.
The Erie SeaWolves lost to Harrisburg 7-3. Kody Kirland hit his league leading 8th home run for the SeaWolves. The SeaWolves and Akron Aeros meet for the first of 22 times in 2006 beginning Monday night at Jerry Uht Park in a buck night matchup.
The No 3 Mercyhurst College men’s lacrosse team was selected as one of four teams to compete in the 2006 NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championships by the Division II selection committee. The Lakers are 12-2 this season and will travel to No 2 Dowling on May 21st.
The Behrend Lions softball team captured the 2006 AMCC Championship on Sunday, May 7 when they defeated defending champion Pitt-Bradford, 5-0. The win means an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs which begins May 12.
As part of the Erie Broadway Series, “Cats” is playing the Warner Theater on May 9 - 10.
Lake Erie Speedway will open on Friday May 12.
The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm May 12th - July 8th (no shows Memorial Day weekend). Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814.456.5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.
The 14th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is Saturday, May 13. Proceeds benefit the which distributes to 245 agencies in the region.
The Technology Council of NWPA Business Information Technology Summit (BITS) will take place at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on May 17.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival will be held in Edinboro May 19-21.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.
The Tom Ridge Environmental Center will open May 26th. This $31 million, state-of-the-art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.
