The Greater Erie Industrial Development Corporation was awarded $450,000 to restore rail service to the 120-acre industrial park that once was home to Hammermill and IP, initially servicing two businesses of the Erie Management Group, a multi-million-dollar bio-diesel manufacturing company and a paint/ solvent production facility. Groundbreaking on those two businesses will be held in June.

Jonathan Ozimek was to have enrolled at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie this Fall to become a pediatrician. Tragically, he won’t have the chance. Cancer claimed Ozimek’s life last week after a nine year battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He passed away at his home in Pennfield, NY.

The Gem City Bands of Erie are seeking new members. Concert Band: All instruments are welcome. Jazz Ensemble: Jazz Pianist needed; must have own keyboard, amp is provided. For more info, visit www.gemcitybands.org or call 602-9247.
The Concert Band, currently consisting of 35-40 volunteer members, is very versatile, playing music such as old overtures, show tunes, traditional concert band pieces, movie scores, and marches. The band presents a spring and fall concert, as well as numerous nursing home and community performances throughout the year. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings from 7:45 to 9:30 pm in the lower-level meeting room of St John’s Lutheran Church at 23rd and Peach Streets. The Jazz Ensemble was formed in 2003 as a smaller, spin-off group dedicated to performing jazz, big band, and swing sounds from all eras. The Jazz Ensemble has a large repertoire that includes such jazz greats as Sammy Nestico, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich. The 20-25 piece Jazz group rehearses on Tuesday nights from 6:15 to 7:30, prior to Concert Band practice.

Dennis Alkson, vice president and manager of DVUA Pittsburgh has been named “Insurance Person of the Year” by The Insurance Club of Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of Gannon University in Erie, Pa.

The Greater Erie Board of REALTORS welcomes the following new members:

The Erie Freeze indoor football team play the Reading Express at the Tullio Arena at 7 pm.

Two-time heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson passed away at age 71. He fought in Erie in 1971.

West Virginia Wesleyan upset the Gannon softball team 3-1 in the opening round of the Great Lakes regional. Gannon returns to action Friday morning against Wayne State in the loser’s bracket.

The Penn State-Behrend sfotball team lost to Ithaca in the NCAA Regional.

Lineman Dave Kleppick of Pittsburgh Allderdice will attend Allegheny College to continue his academic and football careers.


Tonight is the final performance for the United We Stand Theater Troupe comedy All Over Town. The show will be held at 7 pm at the St Patrick’s Cauley Auditorium, 215 East 4th Street in Erie.

The Erie Playhouse Youtheatre production of Robin Hood opens tonight. Show dates are May 12-14 and May 19-21. For tickets and more info call, (814) 454-2852.

Lake Erie Speedway will open for the season tonight.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm tonight through July 8th (no shows Memorial Day weekend). Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814.456.5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.

The 14th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is Saturday, May 13. Proceeds benefit the which distributes to 245 agencies in the region.

The Orchid Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania annual show will be held May 13 and 14 at the JMC Ice Arena, 423 West 38th Street, Erie PA. Saturday hours are noon to 6 pm and Sunday from 10-5. Admission is only $2 with Zoo Members and children under 12 admitted free.

Audtition call for actors. The United We Stand Theater Troupe wants you. If you can sing or act, check out the auditions, Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16, 7-9 pm, at the Avalon Hotel for their musical Dreamgirls! The 12 performance show, which will be held at the Metroplex, opens Friday, July 28 and runs till Sunday, August 20. Showtimes are 7 pm, and 3 pm for the Sunday matinees.

The Technology Council of NWPA Business Information Technology Summit (BITS) will take place at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on May 17.

Sonya Kitchell will perform at the Mercyhurst College Walker Recital Hall on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30 pm. For tickets call the box office at (814) 824-3000.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival will be held in Edinboro May 19-21.

The Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force 4th annual Bike Around the Bay will be held in Erie, PA on May 20, 2006. Enjoy Erie’s bay and lakeshore as you bike 10, 30 or 50 miles around scenic Presque Isle State Park and bayside vistas. Check out the new Tom Ridge Environmental Center on your route. Funds raised benefit the Earth Force program serving 2,500 youth in western Pennsylvania. Bring the entire family. Grand prize: Cannondale bike and tag-a-long.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.

The Tom Ridge Environmental Center will open May 26th. This $31 million, state-of-the-art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.
