Erie PA News and Events for Monday May 15, 2006
Tuesday is the primary election. Get out and vote.
I’d bet most of you don’t know that the very first primary was held in Crawford County in 1842. It all started when the Democratic Republican Party of Crawford County couldn’t agree on which candidates to put on the ballot at their August 1842 convention. The delegates set a September date for party members to vote in their districts for candidates for the November election. Because 6 of the 8 candidates won the general election, the primary was declared a success and was repeated. Other parts of the state, including Erie, copied the system. The Republican Party endorsed the primary system for nationwide use in 1860.
Sponsored by Continuing Education at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, the STEM Summer Institute will offer nine weeklong, one-credit courses for middle- and high-school teachers during two weeks in June. This specialized professional development training in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields satisfies Pennsylvania’s Act 48 requirement that all educators complete continuing education courses in order to maintain active teaching certifications. Offered during three-hour morning or afternoon sessions, five classes are available June 19-23, with four during June 26-30. Participants can select up to four of the nine courses, which are taught by Penn State Behrend faculty members. Those interested are encouraged to call Continuing Education at 898-6103 or click here for more information.

John Ennis has been assigned to Double-A Erie from Toledo. He has a 1.50 ERA in 11 appearances.
Katelyn Martin of West Chester scored four goals on Sunday to up her career point total to 362, breaking the former Division II women’s lacrosse mark of 359 held by Deb Wood of Gannon University.
