A third prototype for the non-invasive cancer treatment invented by John Kanzius of Erie will be manufactured at Industrial Sales and Manufacturing (ISM) in Erie. US Senator Rick Santorum was on hand as he helped secure a $200,000 grant for development of the equipment. Kanzius (K3TUP) once owned WJET-TV, WJET-FM, and WFGO-FM in Erie PA, received patents for the cancer treatment procedure. High-powered radio waves are focused on cancer cells and destroy the cell membranes. Kanzius explained that when the body is hit by the flu, a fever causes the flu cells to overheat and the membranes are destroyed. Radio waves act like the fever with cancer cells.
Kyle Schriefer of Erie finished first in the nation among Army ROTC cadets. Today he will graduate from Virginia Military Institute and received his commission.
“Horses of Gettysburg” is a new documentary about contributions horses made to the famous Civil War battle. Over 70,000 hourses were used by soldiers with an estimated 5,000 killed. The script was co-writted by Michael Kraus who received his degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Mercyhurst College will graduate 543 bachelor’s degree candidates on Sunday, May 21. Mercyhurst’s adult and graduate programs will award 99 masters, 46 bachelor’s, and two will earn associate degrees. On Saturday, 201 students at Mercyhurst North East will earn associate degrees.
Erie Plastics management and union, IUE/CWA Local 681 (International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture Workers-Communications Workers of America), ratified a new five-year contract, effective May 1, 2006, at a vote of the union membership on Wednesday evening, May 10, 2006. The new contract will expire on April 30, 2011.
Last nights game between the Akron Aeros and the Erie SeaWolves has been postponed due to rain. A re-scheduled date has not been set.
The Technology Council of NWPA Business Information Technology Summit (BITS) will take place at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on May 17.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival will be held in Edinboro May 19-21.
The 41st annual Erie Zoo Parade takes place Saturday May 20th at 10 am. The parade begins at the intersection of 18th and State Streets. It will march north on State Street to Perry Square at South Park Row and State Street.
The Mercyhurst Prep School Crew Team will host its annual Invitational Regatta on May 20, 2006. Over 25 High School Teams will converge on Presque Isle State Park Vista parking lots 1, 2, and 3. Hundreds of rowers will compete on the adjacent waters of Presque Isle Bay for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals during this day long event. The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.
The Tom Ridge Environmental Center will open May 26th. This $31 million, state-of-the-art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.
