The Picture Project was created in order to help the residents of Gulfport and Biloxi retrieve photographs lost during Hurricane Katrina. More than 1,300 photos that have been posted online in a search for their owners. The Picture Project is a volunteer undertaking by some kind folks in Erie, Pa including Sue Weber and Connie Hawkins.

Ernie Johnson got a construction job after graduating from high school in Erie. After 3 years in the US Army, he moved to Pittsburgh and got a job as an apprentice carpenter. On Saturday, the Pennsylvania Council of Carpenters presented Johnson the Golden Hammer Award for 50 years as a carpenter. He is 74 and is still working.

Preston Larrison outdueled Zach Segovia in the opener, and four pitchers combined on a shutout in the second game as the Erie Seawolves swept the Reading Phillies in a doubleheader. The two teams play again today at 1:05 pm.

The Canton Legends defeated the Erie Freeze 50-27.

The Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival, held on the campus of Edinboro University, wraps up today.

The first cruise-in of 2006 will be held on May 22 at the Park and Ride lot on the Erie Bayfront.

The Gannon University Small Business Development Center is holding a entrepreneur seminar for veterans at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center, 7794 Peach St, on Tuesday May 23 at 9 am. This seminar is facilitated by Donn Nemchick, a US Navy Veteran. The seminar is designed for veterans and spouces of veterans looking to start their own business. The cost of the seminar is $15. The Young Erie Professionals are holding a First Time Home Buyer Seminar on Thursday, May 25, from 6 to 7:30 pm in the Mercyhurst College Alumni Board Room in Old Main. Please contact Erin for more information and to RSVP before Tuesday, May 23 at ekoskoski(at)yahoo.com.


The Tom Ridge Environmental Center will open May 26th. This $31 million, state-of-the-art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.

The 16th annual Erie Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival takes place in downtown Erie in Perry Square May 31st - June 3rd, 11am - 10pm daily. Admission is free. Bands include Boyd and Tim, Sam Hyman, Brown Eyed Susans, Swerve, The 4 Jays, Gem City Jazz Ensamble, By Popular Demand, Familiar Spirit, Steve Trohoske and 3-Bop, Red Hot Rug Cutters and Chocolate Starfish.

Gannon University this summer will offer a series of workshops for young writers looking to hone their skills. The Writers’ Workshops 2006 will be led by Sally L LeVan, PhD, professor of English at Gannon, and the teachers of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Writing Project. The sessions are open to students in grades 4-12 who want to discover and develop their writing “process” and write more creatively and purposefully. Five sessions are scheduled: June 19-23, June 26-30, July 10-14, July 24-30, and Aug 7-11. Each session is limited to the first 25 students to register. Individual class sessions will run from 9 am to 12 pm and will be held in room 3200 of the Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach Street. The cost is $125 for a one-week session or $200 for two weeks.
