Two 14 year olds and a 13 year old are in police custody after they stole a van early this morning and were involved in a high speed chase. The van didn’t make the curve along the Bayfront Parkway and crashed, downing a metal power pole.
The state has purchased 3.5 acres, known as the Brugger Property, along the shores of Lake Erie for lakeshore preservation and a community park. They paid $50,000 for the property in Fairview Township.
McShane Welding, Custom Engineering Co and Riley Power, all based out of Erie, teamed with the Northwest Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center (NWIRC), along with the Northwest Workforce Investment Board and the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership to customize a training program through Clarion University for 24 workers who were interested in pursuing careers in welding. All began full time jobs the day after they graduated. There is a sever shortage of wlders in the Erie area.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has announced its decision to merge the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) with the Center for Career Development (CDC). Mary Beth McCarthy has been appointed to the newly created position of director of Career Development and Academic Advising, and will oversee DUS and the CDC. McCarthy has been director of the CDC for 25 years and with Penn State Behrend since November 1980. She has held various positions, including assistant to the dean of student affairs for placement and financial aid.
Dr Frank Hagan, credited with advancing a criminal justice program at Mercyhurst College recognized as one of the best in the country among smaller schools, is his peers’ choice for the college’s 2006 Teaching Excellence Award. Hagan holds a bachelor of arts degree from Gannon University, a master’s from the University of Maryland and his doctorate from Case Western Reserve University, all in sociology.
The Erie SeaWolves won their eighth straight ballgame and have evened their record to .500 (22-22) for the first time in 2006 with a 14-0 win over Harrisburg. Humberto Sanchez fell one out shy of a complete-game shutout victory when he allowed a two-out single to Ender Chavez in the bottom of the ninth. Betsy Mitchell has been named athletic director of Allegheny College. Mitchel is a a former Olympic gold medalist and world record holder. In 1984, she was a silver in the 100 meter backstroke and a gold as a member of the 400 meter medley relay team. In 1988, she earned a silver as a member of the 400 meter medley relay team. She has a bachelors and masters from the University of Texas.
Bill Stara has been named the 2006 Morgan Wootten Award winner as the All-Met Coach of the Year for the Washington DC area. Stara began high school coaching in 1982 after a playing career at Penn State Erie, Behrend College in Erie, Pa.
Niko Simon of Erie has signed a national letter of intent to run cross country of Limestone College.
Mount St Mary’s freshman Derek Taylor (Erie, Pa/ McDowell) has been named First Team All-Northeast Conference at the No 4 singles position in tennis.
Every Wednesday is free admission to all four Erie Art Museum galleries from 11 am to 5 pm.
The 16th Annual Baumann Memorial Fastpitch Tournament will be held May 26-28 at the and Hess Fields in Erie at 12th and Hess Streets. Nine worldclass fastpitch teams from across the United States and Canada will compete, starting Friday night at 6:30, all day Saturday, with semi finals on Sunday at 9:30 am, with the finals at 11:30 am. All proceeds from the tournament benefits the Ahlzeimers Association Memory Walk, led by Jim Camp. There will be a huge silent auction on Saturday from 11-5, and plenty of concessions.

There will be a Bike Night on Friday May 26 along State Street beginning at 5 pm which is sponsored by the Erie Downtown Improvement District.

The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.
The Band Camp for Adult Musicians will enjoy its fifth season at Allegheny College this June. Founded in 1989 by John Fleming, the camp has grown from 17 campers for one week to close to 140 campers split over two weeks for the 2006 season. Week I will be held June 11-16, with Week II running June 25-30. Spots remain for musicians interested in participating in the two weeks of the Adult Band Camp. Any players of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments who are college age or beyond and are interested in attending should call Conference and Event Services at Allegheny College: 814-332-3101.
