Nothing like the sun and 80 degree temperatures to bring the people out. The bayfront was busy, Waldameer Park and Water World has a great crowd, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center was bustling with people, thousands enjoyed Presque Isle State Park on the first day lifeguards were on duty on the beaches and the boaters were out in force. The he aroma of grilled Smith’s Hot Dogs filled the air from noon into the evening.
The 2006 Erie Air Show will be held Saturday and Sunday July 15-16. The show last year was held in September which seemed to have cut down on the number of out of town visitors.
Timothy Flanagan has been named the next president of Framingham State College. Flanagan received a bachelor’s degree from Gannon University in Erie, and a master’s degree and a doctorate in criminal justice from SUNY Albany.
In Erie real estate news, last week there were 154 new listings, 90 went pending and 92 closed. Interest on a 30 year mortgage rose to 6.62 percent while 15-year mortgage rates rose to 6.23 percent.
The Erie Seawolves beat the Altoona Curve 9-5. Christopher Maples hit 2 homers and Kody Kirkland went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Sean Casey hit his first homerun since starting his rehabilitation assignment with Altoona. The two teams will continue their series on Sunday at 1:05 pm at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. Mike Connolly (4-3) will start for the Curve against Humberto Sanchez (5-2) for the SeaWolves.
The Erie Freeze defeated Miami Valley 54-29. David Dinkins went 19 of 33 for 199 yards with 6 TD’s. Darmel Whitfield caught 9 passes for 79 yards and 4 TD’s.
The Super Sportsman Championship Race will highlight racing today at Bobby Rohrer’s Eriez Speedway. Erie’s Don McGuire sits atop the Sportsman points and will be one of the favorites to win the Championship event. Lakewood’s Chad Carlson is second followed by Jim Leonard from Jamestown, Ben Burgess from Sherman and Jake Eller from McKean. Gates will open at 4:30 pm with racing starting promptly at 6 pm.
The 16th Annual Baumann Memorial Fastpitch Tournament will be held today at the and Hess Fields in Erie at 12th and Hess Streets. Nine worldclass fastpitch teams from across the United States and Canada will compete with semi finals on Sunday at 9:30 am and the finals at 11:30 am. All proceeds from the tournament benefits the Ahlzeimers Association Memory Walk, led by Jim Camp.
The Family First Sports Park Memorial Day Shootout takes place through Monday. The Memorial Day Shootout is for premier soccer teams ages U9–U19 and over 220 teams will participate in 2006. Scores of college coaches will be on hand to scout players. Every hotel room in Erie County is booked and long waits are expected at the restaurants on upper Peach Street.
Extend your holiday weekend by coming to the Erie Community Blood Bank this Tuesday, May 30, from 11-2pm to enjoy a barbeque hosted by George’s Restaurant. George’s will be supplying their famous “tickle your ribs” platter with all the picnic trimmings. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. There are 6 hikes scheduled at Presque Isle State Park for Pennsylvania Hiking Week. On Tuesday, it’s a a Creepy Crawlies hike. Meet at the Presque Isle Lighthouse Lot. FREE, no fee, no registration.

The Presque Isle Volleyball Club Tournament will be held on Saturday June 3. Teams for this tournament will have 6 players with at least 2 players of the opposite sex. There are three levels of play: recreational, intermediate, and power. Prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division. Entry fee is $90 per team. Tournament will take place at Presque Isle State Park Volleyball Facilities at Beach 6. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. and play starts promptly at 9 am. Call Geoff to Pre-Register at (814) 860-8409.
The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.
The Band Camp for Adult Musicians will enjoy its fifth season at Allegheny College this June. Founded in 1989 by John Fleming, the camp has grown from 17 campers for one week to close to 140 campers split over two weeks for the 2006 season. Week I will be held June 11-16, with Week II running June 25-30. Spots remain for musicians interested in participating in the two weeks of the Adult Band Camp. Any players of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments who are college age or beyond and are interested in attending should call Conference and Event Services at Allegheny College: 814-332-3101.
