Presque Isle State Park had approximately 100,000 visitors over the Memorial Day weekend. The beaches were filled with sun bathers while some ventured into the cool Lake Erie waters.
WJET-TV reported that Rum Runners will be moving from East Dobbins Landing to West Dobbins Landing, in place of the old Waterfront Restaurant. Tim Sedney and family have owned the bar for the past 20 years. Sedney sold the lease on the space where Rum Runners currently sits to make for the McAllister Place Development which will be a mix of retail, apartments and parking.

Talks are being held in June about the possibility of placing windmills in the Great Lakes. The turbines would up to 400 feet tall with blade spans of over 300 feet. Winds over water are usually stronger, less chaotic and more consistent than on land. It could take developers decades to get the required federal and state permits.
State Senator Jane Earll of Erie, head of the Senate Finance Committee, is among the names mentioned to move up to key leadership rolls in the seanate. Senate President Pro Tem Robert Jubelirer and Majority Leader David Brightbill both lost in the primary becasue of their support of the legislative pay raise.
James Murray, a disabled former Army Ranger and his girlfriend Becky Boyd, both of Erie, were mentioned in a Washington Times article about people attendig the annual National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC.
The Altoona Curve scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a deadlocked score and defeat the Erie SeaWolves 4-2 on Monday.
Dave Patronik of Gannon University was named third team NCAA Division II All-America. Patronik is arguably the best college golfer this area has produced.
A beautiful night for racing greeted fans and racers on Sunday at Eriez Speedway. The evening’s events were sponsored by Tobber Chassis. Rick Thompson won a caution strewn Spectator feature in which only eleven of the twenty-eight starters finished. The Super Late Model King of the Hill was won by Dave Hess Jr. over many times Eriez Champion Rich Gardner. Rusty Briggs held off Chad Carlson to win the featured Super Sportsman Championship Race. Joe Weber’s pass for lead on lap seven set him up for his second win of the season. Cautions were the rule in the E-Mod event as Justin Carlson started on the pole and led every lap for his first of the season at Eriez. Dave Hess Jr. won an action filled Super Late Model race besting the twenty-seven car field for his second win in row at Eriez. Stephanie Hilyer won her second Lady Challengers feature and Chris Withers won his second Super Challenger feature.

There are 6 hikes scheduled at Presque Isle State Park for Pennsylvania Hiking Week. Tuesday, it’s a a Creepy Crawlies hike. Meet at the Presque Isle Lighthouse Lot by 6:30 pm. All hikes are FREE, no fee, no registration. On Wednesday, it’s a birding hike with the start taking place at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, Room 108, at 8:30 am. Thursday is the Shifting Sands Hike and the meet takes place at the Gull Point Trailhead at 10 am. Friday is the Edible Plant Hike. Meet at the Lighthouse parking lot at 10 am. Saturday is the Bike Hike at the Cookhouse Parking Lot at 10:30 am

The Presque Isle Volleyball Club Tournament will be held on Saturday June 3. Teams for this tournament will have 6 players with at least 2 players of the opposite sex. There are three levels of play: recreational, intermediate, and power. Prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division. Entry fee is $90 per team. Tournament will take place at Presque Isle State Park Volleyball Facilities at Beach 6. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. and play starts promptly at 9 am. Call Geoff to Pre-Register at (814) 860-8409.
The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.
The first Presque Isle After Dark of the season takes place on Saturday June 3 at 8:30 pm. Meet at Presque Isle Lighthouse lot. Hoots and howls, whippoorwills and woodcocks.
