General Electric Corporation (NYSE: GE) announced that it is preparing to ship its 1,000th Evolution Series locomotive out of Erie PA. The milestone will be achieved just 17 months after GE began commercial production of Evolution locomotives. The 1000th unit, which bears road number 5972, will be delivered to BNSF Railway. Evolution Series locomotives achieve a 3-5 percent fuel savings over the previous generation of GE locomotives and reduce, on average, regulated emissions by more than 40 percent. The locomotives were the first to meet the EPA’s Tier II emissions standards and they are among the first of 17 products in GE’s Ecomagination portfolio.


The Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) opens today. Admission is free. The place is very impressive. Stop by this weekend if you have a chance. This $31 million, state of the art center will share the treasures of Presque Isle State Park with nature enthusiasts, educators, researchers, tourists and other visitors.


A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held today for the Lampe Marina Campground. The facility has 42 waterfront campsites. The campground in the the center left of the picture. Presque Isle State Park is across the channel.

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie is taking a lead position in the future of medical education by introducing a new program to attract more physicians to family practice. LECOM is continuing its mission to help grow the osteopathic medical profession by starting a Primary Care Scholars Pathway (PCSP) that will reduce the time it takes to become a family physician. The PCSP will condense four years of medical education into three years in order to graduate more family doctors sooner and to save these students one year of expenses that adds to the mounting debt held by medical college graduates. The AOA COCA approved the substantive change requested by LECOM to initiate the Primary Care Scholars Pathway in the 2007-2008 academic year.

Mackenzie Speer has been named valedictorian for the Clarion Area High School Class of 2006. Speer will attend Gannon University , majoring in chemistry.

Julia Gooding, a teacher at Hopewell Area High School near Pittsburgh, has been received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award comes with a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Gooding graduated for Gannon University with a degree in chemistry.

The Erie SeaWolves nine-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday afternoon in Harrisburg by a final score of 7-5. The SeaWolves face Altoona tonight at 6:30 pm at Jerry Uht Park in Erie.

Lake Erie Speedway will feature the Advance Auto Parts Night at the Races. Racing will feature spectator drags and the Plyler Overhead Door Late Models, Advance Auto Parts Super Stocks, Pepsi Legends, Bandoleros, Jensen’s Target Collision Figure 8’s and Krazy Kompacts and Dodge Trucks.

Mercyhurst College men’s ice hockey head coach Rick Gotkin has announced seven recruits for the 2006-07 season. Among the signees are five forwards and a pair of defensemen. Brandon Coccimiglio, Cody Collins, Neil Graham, Chris Risi, Nick Vandenbeld arrive in Erie as accomplished forwards, while Matt Fennell and Derek Fisher will bolster the Laker defense. Mercyhurst finished the 2005-06 season at 22-13-1 overall and 19-8-1 in Atlantic Hockey.

There will be a Bike Night today along State Street beginning at 5 pm which is sponsored by the Erie Downtown Improvement District.

The 16th Annual Baumann Memorial Fastpitch Tournament will be held today through May 28 at the and Hess Fields in Erie at 12th and Hess Streets. Nine worldclass fastpitch teams from across the United States and Canada will compete, starting Friday night at 6:30, all day Saturday, with semi finals on Sunday at 9:30 am, with the finals at 11:30 am. All proceeds from the tournament benefits the Ahlzeimers Association Memory Walk, led by Jim Camp. There will be a huge silent auction on Saturday from 11-5, and plenty of concessions.

The Family First Sports Park Memorial Day Shootout takes place May 27-29. The Memorial Day Shootout is for premier soccer teams ages U9–U19 and over 200 teams will participate in 2006. Scores of college coaches will be on hand to scout players. Every hotel room in Erie County is booked and long waits are expected at the restaurants on upper Peach Street.

The 16th annual Erie Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival takes place in downtown Erie in Perry Square May 31st - June 3rd, 11am - 10pm daily. Admission is free. Bands include Boyd and Tim, Sam Hyman, Brown Eyed Susans, Swerve, The 4 Jays, Gem City Jazz Ensamble, By Popular Demand, Familiar Spirit, Steve Trohoske and 3-Bop, Red Hot Rug Cutters and Chocolate Starfish.

The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.

The Band Camp for Adult Musicians will enjoy its fifth season at Allegheny College this June. Founded in 1989 by John Fleming, the camp has grown from 17 campers for one week to close to 140 campers split over two weeks for the 2006 season. Week I will be held June 11-16, with Week II running June 25-30. Spots remain for musicians interested in participating in the two weeks of the Adult Band Camp. Any players of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments who are college age or beyond and are interested in attending should call Conference and Event Services at Allegheny College: 814-332-3101.
