Erie PA News and Events for Friday June 2, 2006

A man was killed after being struck by a truck on I-90 near the Route 97 interchange (Exit 27). More questions than answers on this one.

Thomas McNutt of Erie lost control of his truck Thursday morning, crashing into a concrete barrier wall on the median just west of the Lordstown, Ohio interchange. He was flown by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was listed in stable condition. McNutt was hauling a full load of bottles of Smirnoff Ice with scores of cases breaking on the highway.

After receiving the most update blood supply information, it has been determined that there is a critical shortage of ALL BLOOD TYPES. Type O, A and in an unusual case, type B, are all dangerously low. The Community Blood Bank urgently needs blood donors of all types to help patients in our local hospitals. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30 pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9 am-12:30 pm. Photo ID required.

Armed with six weeks of coursework and field preparation, 15 students from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will complete their three-credit Environmental Issues in Eastern Europe (Science, Engineering and Technology 497A) course this month during an 11-day trip overseas to Cottbus and Berlin, Germany, beginning June 4. Offered in conjunction with Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (BTU Cottbus) and Penn State Behrend’s Schools of Science and Engineering and Engineering Technology, the course is a direct result of the budding student and academic-centered relationship between the two institutions.

The Erie SeaWolves defeated Bowie 5-1 in 5 innings. The game was called early becasue or rain and lightning in Bowie. The SeaWolves return home to host Akron at 7:05 pm tonight at Jerry Uht Park.

Lake Erie Speedway will make another attempt to open their season tonight with a full slate of races scheduled including Plyler Overhead Door Late Models, Dodge Trucks, Advance Auto Parts Super Stocks, Pepsi Legends, Jensen’s Target Collision Figure 8’s, bandoleros and Krazy Kompacts. They have been rained out the past 3 weeks. Gates open at 5:30 with the first race starting at 7:30. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids with children under 5 admitted free.

There are hikes scheduled at Presque Isle State Park for Pennsylvania Hiking Week. Today is the Edible Plant Hike. Meet at the Lighthouse parking lot at 10 am. All hikes are FREE, no fee, no registration. Saturday is the Bike Hike at the Cookhouse Parking Lot at 10:30 am.

The 16th annual Erie Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival takes place in downtown Erie in Perry Square today through June 3rd, 11am - 10pm daily. Admission is free.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through July 8th. Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814-456-5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.

Join the Gem City Jazz Ensemble for a two-hour performance during Erie’s Wild Rib Cookoff and Music Festival Saturday, June 3 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Perry Square gazebo. The 20-member jazz band, under the direction of Tim McKinney, will feature jazz favorites such as Girl from Ipanema, Pennsylvania 65000, Bandstand Boogie and New York, New York. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Presque Isle Volleyball Club Tournament will be held on Saturday June 3. Teams for this tournament will have 6 players with at least 2 players of the opposite sex. There are three levels of play: recreational, intermediate, and power. Prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division. Entry fee is $90 per team. Tournament will take place at Presque Isle State Park Volleyball Facilities at Beach 6. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. and play starts promptly at 9 am. Call Geoff to Pre-Register at (814) 860-8409.

The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.

The first Presque Isle After Dark of the season takes place on Saturday June 3 at 8:30 pm. Meet at Presque Isle Lighthouse lot. Hoots and howls, whippoorwills and woodcocks. Come explore the sights and sounds of the night on these dusk to dark hikes along the interior trails of Presque Isle. Discover why night time is the right time to explore your world. No fee, no registration.

The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
