An Erie man drowned in Presque Isle Bay in an apparent suicide. Gerald Michalski of West 8th Street, walked into the water near the foot of Virginia Ave and Ravine Drive near the Erie Yacht Club. Witnesses at Ferncliff Beach said he left some personal items on shore and simply walked in over his head. The Sheriff’s Department SCUBA Team, the Coast Guard, Emergycare and others recoved his body about four hours later. This was the second public suicide in the past few days. On Friday morning, a truck driver who found out a medical condition would no longer allow him to drive walked into the path of a semi on I-90.

Gannon University will offer a new bachelor of arts degree program designed specifically for students interested in careers in both the print and electronic media. The new major, journalism communications, will become part of the university’s curriculum beginning in the fall 2006 semester.
The Mercyhurst College Office of Adult and Graduate Programs announced a new Web-based concentration in nonprofit management as part of its 30-credit Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (OL) program. Qualified students may also pursue the nonprofit management curriculum as a 12-credit graduate certificate, with credits transferable to the OL program.
Marywood University announced the appointment of Joyce White, PhD to the position of director of the School of Social Work. White was an associate professor of social work and director of the master in social work program at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Summer classes and workshops begin June 19 at the Erie Art Museum. There are classes for children and adults. Teachers can earn Act 48 credits by taking Museum classes. Subjects include: Oriental Painting, Sign Language, Watercolor Landscape, Pastel Drawing/Painting, Boat Yard Studio, Digital Photography, Bellydancing, Framing, Pottery, Ceramics and more.
Akron beat the Erie SeaWolves 4-3 in front of 4,349 fans on Sunday. After 27 home games, Erie has an average attendance of 2,765. The SeaWolves begin a week long roadtrip with a series in New Hampshire on Tuesday.
John Paul Dellacamera, once the voice of the Erie Blades in the late 70’s and early 80’s, will serve on ABC/ESPN’s World Cup B team.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through July 8th. Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Over 5,000 bikers are expected in Erie on Saturday June 10 to raise awareness and support for US troops serving in the Iraq war and for the Western Pennsylvania Families of Fallen Heroes Foundation. Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Show takes place June 15-18 at Robertson Field on the campus of Allegheny College. Hot air balloon event featuring 30 balloons and a Night Glow with 10 balloons. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place June 26 – July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event.
