Me: When is the Erie Management Group going to start the move to the former Hammermill/ IP plant and have their groundbreaking?
Boss man: They have already begun to move in. The groundbreaking on the biodiesel plant should be later this month or next.
Me: They should put out a press release to let people know.
They didn’t have to put out a press release. Carol Wilson of WSEE reported the story yesterday. Erie Management Group leased the former Hammermill/ International Paper site and will move five of their companies into it. The companies are: International Business Linkages (IBL), a full-service provider of technology solutions; Bio Preserve, a manufacturer of wood protection products; KDI (Kold Draft), the manufacturer of ice machines; Gryphon Analytics which will manufacturer rapid detection systems for identifying ultra-sensitive chemical and biological agents; and Lake Erie Biofuels, a manufacturer of biodiesel.
Eriez Magnetics announced they will expand their Asbury Road plant. The more than 30,000 sq ft addition will add 20-30 more people to they payroll.
Eat more chicken. PETA will hold a protest today at the KFC at 1116 Parade Street from 3-4 pm.
Verizon now has their corporate office building up for sale. The building at 10th and Sassafras is listed at $4.1 million.
Campbell Pottery Week is back at the Erie Community Blood Bank. The Campbell Pottery Store of Cambridge Springs is encouraging people to donate blood to help end the current blood shortage. Every donor who comes in receives a 20 percent off coupon to the Campbell Pottery Store and gets a chance to take home one of over 130 pieces of Pottery that have been donated for this event. About 1 in 5 donors will go home with a beautiful and functional piece of Campbell Pottery. There will also be a raffle for a large vase (valued at over $150) that all donors can register to win. The Presque Isle Partnership (PIP) will be awarded $7000 in Scholarships to local Erie PA High School Students at an Awards Ceremony held at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) on Monday, June 5, 2006. The seven (7) local High School Seniors will each receive a $1000 Community and Educational Award from the Presque Isle Partnership as a result of their outstanding achievements and participation in Presque Isle activities. The students receiving this Award are Lasheena Barnes (Central High School), Shane Kelley (Collegiate Academy), Connor Kimball (McDowell), Jessica O’Connell (Central High School), Thao Kim Tran (East High School), Emily Washek (McDowell), and Amy Whiteford (McDowell). One of the qualifications to receive this award required participation in the Walk to Make a Great Park Better, an annual walk hosted by the Presque Isle Partnership. The October 2005 Walk resulted in over 650 walkers, with many students represented from the local community. The Walk for a Better Park was initiated in 2002 in honor of David Hanlon, a McDowell teacher, parent and advocate of Presque Isle. Three of the students receiving the Award this year are from McDowell High School, which actively supports the walk each year. The Presque Isle Partnership is a non-profit organization that works to protect, preserve and enhance the park, making it a better place for people that visit the park while preserving the parks delicate ecosystem. The 2006 Walk for a Better Park will take place on Sunday, October 8th, 2006.
The preparatory department of the newly-chartered Indiana Asbury College opened on June 5. Cyrus Nutt, a Methodist minister and recent graduate of Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, oversaw the new department. The year was 1837. The school later became DePauw University.
John Norbeck was named director of Pennsylvania’s Bureau of State Parks. Norbeck is from Maryland. Since Gov Rendell thinks Pennsylvania begins and ends with Philadelphia, it is unknown if he regards Maryland part of Pennsylvania.
Erie Cathedral Prep edged Norwin 3-2 in Class AAAA PIAA baseball. Prep will play Mt Lebanon in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
In the first round of the PIAA Class A baseball playoffs, Erie Villa Maria defeated Geibel 9-8. The Victors will play Bishop Canevin on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Lake Erie Speedway near Erie, Pennsylvania will host the ASALMS Northern Division this Friday June 9th for the second running of the Erie 100. Ironically this will be the first event of the 2006 season for the 3/8s mile progressively banked paved oval as Mother Nature has been perfect so far at the Keystone State speed plant. The race will be taped for broadcast on the Speed Channel.
The 40-member Gem City Concert Band, under the direction of Betty McKinney, will present its Spring Concert at St. John Parish Center, adjacent to St. John Lutheran’s Church, 2216 Peach Street. The performance will be held this evening at 7 pm and will feature a variety of music suitable for any taste. Selections will include Gustav Holst’s Jupiter, Belsterling’s March of the Steel Men, and Percy Grainger’s Handel in the Strand, among others. The concert is free and open to the public, with plenty of off-street parking and wheelchair accessibility. Donations will be accepted.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through July 8th. Tickets are $10 regular, $12 riser and $15 VIP. Students with ID can see the show for just $5. Reservations can be made by phone at 814-456-5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office 145 West 11th Street. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday.

Over 5,000 bikers are expected in Erie on Saturday June 10 to raise awareness and support for US troops serving in the Iraq war and for the Western Pennsylvania Families of Fallen Heroes Foundation. The Penn State Behrend Alumni Society is hosting a Full Moon Fundraiser at the papermoon Restaurant on Tuesday, June 13, from 6 – 9 p.m. to benefit The Logan Music Series: Music at Noon and the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society scholarship. Located at 1325 State Street in downtown Erie, Paper Moon’s Full Moon fundraisers are held each full moon. The philanthropic evening will feature 24 celebrity bartenders, who represent faculty and staff, alumni and the alumni society board, plus University Trustees and Council of Fellows members.

Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Show takes place June 15-18 at Robertson Field on the campus of Allegheny College. Hot air balloon event featuring 30 balloons and a Night Glow with 10 balloons. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place June 26 – July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event.
