Former Alaska Commissioner of Fish and Game Jim Brooks recently passed away. Brooks was a native of Erie PA. During his life he was a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot during WWII, Ketchikan dishwasher, Southeast Alaska commercial salmon troller, Alaska Railroad gandy dancer, Willow gold miner, Nenana grease monkey, Kantishna dog musher and a trapper.

Portland swept a doubleheader from the Erie SeaWolves, 4-2 and 7-3 in the first two games played by Portland since Tuesday night due to three straight rainouts. Preston Larrison looks to break a personal three-game losing skid as the SeaWolves attempt to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday in Portland.

Jesse Watkins was hired as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Gannon University. Watkins was an assistant last year at Ashland.

Gannon officials have released the football program’s 2006 schedule which includes 10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games and one non-conference road contest. The Golden Knights’ 2006 slate includes home games against Hillsdale (September 2), Indianapolis (September 16), Wayne State (October 7), Michigan Tech (October 28), and Ashland (November 11). All home games kick off at 1 pm. The road schedule has games at Saginaw Valley State (September 9, 12 noon), Mercyhurst (September 23, 1:30 pm), Tiffin (September 30, 1:30 pm), Ferris State (October 14, 2 pm), Findlay (October 21, 7 pm), and Northern Michigan (November 4, 1 pm).

For the boaters and fishermen, there is work being done on the Dutch Road bridge so the Walnut Creek Marina is only accessible from Manchester Road. Work is supposed to be completed on June 22.

LECOM, The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine will hold its graduation today at 2 pm at Tullio Arena in downtown Erie. There will be 204 graduates from the College of Medicine and 88 from the School of Pharmacy.

The Pepsi Challenger Championship Race will be just one of the featured events today at Eriez Speedway. The Sysco Foods Spectator Championship that was rained out last weekend will be run along with the Budweiser Outlaw Cadet Championship Race that was originally schedule for Mother’s Day. All of the divisions will be competing on Sunday along with the Championship races. Gates will open at 4:30 pm with racing starting promptly at 6 pm.

The Science in Motion Program at Gannon University will host a free summer workshop for high school chemistry and biology teachers from Erie County schools.The workshop is scheduled for June 12-16 and will include a symposium with lectures given by Gannon University faculty members. Participants also will have the opportunity to perform water sampling and testing from Lake Erie as well as attend laboratory sessions and related activities.The Science in Motion Program serves as a resource for local teachers and students by providing opportunities to participate in experiments and making lab equipment and technology more accessible. The Penn State Behrend Alumni Society is hosting a Full Moon Fundraiser at the papermoon Restaurant on Tuesday, June 13, from 6 – 9 p.m. to benefit The Logan Music Series: Music at Noon and the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society scholarship. Located at 1325 State Street in downtown Erie, Paper Moon’s Full Moon fundraisers are held each full moon. The philanthropic evening will feature 24 celebrity bartenders, who represent faculty and staff, alumni and the alumni society board, plus University Trustees and Council of Fellows members.

The first Erie Downtown block party of the season takes place Thursday June 15 at 7 pm on the 1300 block of State Street in front of Calamari’s Squid Row and The papermoon Restaurant. Music by Soul Clap. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available.

Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Show takes place June 15-18 at Robertson Field on the campus of Allegheny College. Hot air balloon event featuring 30 balloons and a Night Glow with 10 balloons. Get moving with Girl Scouts of Penn Lakes first-ever GirlsWalk! walk-a-thon on Sunday, June 17 at Presque Isle State Park Beach 1. Registration starts at 7:45 am, with the walk beginning at 9 am. The event includes fun program stations along the way, where participants can learn about emotional well-being, self-esteem, diet and exercise. Girls and their families can also visit sports clinics and wellness exhibits for trying a variety of hands-on activities. Check out the wellness exhibits to hook up with health care organizations, fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle groups. You don’t need to be a Girl Scout to participate. The ninth annual Bikes For Vets will be held from noon to 4 pm Saturday June 17 at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home, 560 East Third Street, Erie, Pa. Music will be provided by Rock/Blues band Bad Habits. Rain or Shine event with a picnic lunch provided. Dr Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Night in Astronomy event on Thursday, June 22. Knacke will speak on “Jupiter, The Giant Planet” beginning at 8:30 p.m. in 101 Behrend Science Building. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory will follow from 9:30 until 11 pm. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.

The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place June 26 – July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event.
