Motorcycle riders don’t have to wear a helmet in Pennsylvania. Yesterdays accident involving Ben Roehthlisberger showed it might be a good idea to wear one even if you aren’t forced to.
Thanks to Lou Baxter, Brian and and the crew at WJET-TV for the story on Erie Redevopment Authority plans to improve central Erie. In all, 90 existing homes will be remodled and 45 new homes will be built in the area from East 21st and East 26th, between French and Parade Streets.
Apex Silver Mines announced that it had appointed Gerald John Malys as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the company, effective immediately. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a BS in Accounting from Gannon University in Erie PA. Prior to joining Apex, Malys was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in Cyprus Amax Minerals. He also held various senior financial positions in Gulf Oil Company.
Olympia Medical Center’s board of directors announced today the appointment of John A Calderone, PhD, as the hospital’s new chief executive officer. Calderone brings to Olympia 25 years of experience in healthcare management, the past 17 of which have been spent as CEO for three different Southern California hospitals. Calderone holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in counselor education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a post-doctorate advanced certification program in psychology at Edinboro.
Only two years after the college’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences established the bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree in creative writing, two local students from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, distinguished themselves at the 2006 Pennsylvania College English Association (PCEA) Conference held in Pittsburgh. Amada Dziubkowski received the best short fiction award. Dziubkowski is entering her senior year as a creative writing major and is a graduate from North East High School. Raleigh Lee received the best poetry award. Lee is also a senior creative writing major and a graduate from Meadville Area High School.
The Erie SeaWolves open a series at home tonight at 7:05 pm against Reading. They were off Monday.
Manheim Township beat Erie Cathedral Prep 9-7 in the PIAA Class AAAA baseball state semifinal. Villa Maria edged California 3-2 in Class A.
In the Class AA softball semifinal, Harbor Creek beat Sto-Rox 5-0. Iroquois edged Smethport 1-0 in Class A.
Shaun Williams of Erie has signed a letter of intent to attend Union College. Williams was recruited from the Chicago Steel of the US Hockey League. In 27 games he was 8-15-2 with a 3.69 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. Williams logged 1,481 minutes and 13 seconds in goal.
RHP Humberto Sanchez has again been promoted from Erie to Toledo. He was 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts at Erie.
Intermat ranked the Edinboro University incoming recruiting class 26th in Division I.
The Erie Freeze play at the Canton Legends Saturday at 7 pm in the opening round of the American Indoor Football League playoffs.
“The Great American Book Sale” put on by the Friends of the Erie County Public Library is taking place at Villa Maria Center Gynasium, 2551 W 8th St, from 10 am to 8 pm through Friday.

The Penn State Behrend Alumni Society is hosting a Full Moon Fundraiser at the papermoon Restaurant on Tuesday, June 13, from 6 – 9 p.m. to benefit The Logan Music Series: Music at Noon and the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society scholarship. Located at 1325 State Street in downtown Erie, papermoon’s Full Moon fundraisers are held each full moon. The philanthropic evening will feature 24 celebrity bartenders, who represent faculty and staff, alumni and the alumni society board, plus University Trustees and Council of Fellows members.

Get moving with Girl Scouts of Penn Lakes first-ever GirlsWalk! walk-a-thon on Sunday, June 17 at Presque Isle State Park Beach 1. Registration starts at 7:45 am, with the walk beginning at 9 am. The event includes fun program stations along the way, where participants can learn about emotional well-being, self-esteem, diet and exercise. Girls and their families can also visit sports clinics and wellness exhibits for trying a variety of hands-on activities. The ninth annual Bikes For Vets will be held from noon to 4 pm Saturday June 17 at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home, 560 East Third Street, Erie, Pa. Dr Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Night in Astronomy event on Thursday, June 22. Knacke will speak on “Jupiter, The Giant Planet” beginning at 8:30 p.m. in 101 Behrend Science Building. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory will follow from 9:30 until 11 pm. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place June 26 – July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event.
