Yesterday evening, a young woman was hit and killed by an SUV at East 8th and the Bayfront Connector. She and her friends were attempting to cross against the traffic light.

Fidelity National Financial paid Erie based RentWay $1,444,432.35, the amount Fidelity made on short term stock trades with Rent Way stock. Fidelity owns 14.9 percent of RentWay stock and cannot profit from short term gains. RentWay is a rental-purchase company with 790 stores in 34 states.
I-79 will be closed overnight Friday and Saturday in both directions in the large construction zone near Pittsburgh.
Adaena Hornstrom has been named the new Children’s Librarian at the Green Tree Public Library. She earned her bachelor’s in English from Edinboro University and her master’s in library science from the University of Pittsburgh.
The Reading Phillies beat the Erie SeaWolves 4-3 in 10 innings. The SeaWolves play Reading again tonight at 7:05 at Jerry Uht Park in Erie.
Tthe American Indoor Football League could be the worst run league that has ever been. The league uncovered a problem after the regular season concluded with the Huntington Heroes - the team was paying it’s players too much. Huntington was disqualified from the playoffs. The Johnstown Riverhawks were then awarded the playoff spot. Johnstown then turned down the offer because they would not have had time to practice even if they would have been able to round up their team, many of which had left town. Huntington was then named to replace Johnstown. Let’s see if they show up to play Reading.
The Erie Otters released their 2006-2007 schedule. The Otters open the season on Friday, September 22nd in Windsor against the Spitfires.
Mercyhurst College announced the hiring of Paul Colontino as an women’s ice hockey associate head coach. Colontino received both his bachelor’s degree from Mercyhurst in 2000 and his master’s in 2002. He was also a four-year member of the men’s ice hockey team. He then served as an assistant coach for the women’s ice hockey program for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, before taking a similar position at the University of North Dakota, where he has been an assistant for the past four seasons.
Gannon’s Dave Patronik (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) has been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s At-Large second team. Student athletes not participating in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track, or cross country are eligible for the at-large team. Patronik owns a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration major. The senior golfer accomplished the ultimate feat in 2005-06, earning All-America honors for both academics and athletics. He was named to the PING Division II All-America third team.
Dartmouth assistant coach Mike Hodgson has been promoted to offensive coordinator. In 2004, Hodgson was quarterbacks and receivers coach at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Pro wrestler ‘The Blue Meanie’ filmed his third movie called “Curse Of The Werewolf” for Killer Wolf Films in Meadville and Erie, PA. Meanie plays “Franklin” who is a member of a pack of werewolves who in pursuit of main character “Dakota” who is attempting to leave the pack. The movie is set to debut at the Eerie Horror Film Festival on Thursday, October 5.

Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Show takes place today through Sunday, June 15-18, at Robertson Field on the campus of Allegheny College. Get moving with Girl Scouts of Penn Lakes first-ever GirlsWalk! walk-a-thon on Sunday, June 17 at Presque Isle State Park Beach 1. Registration starts at 7:45 am, with the walk beginning at 9 am. The event includes fun program stations along the way, where participants can learn about emotional well-being, self-esteem, diet and exercise. Girls and their families can also visit sports clinics and wellness exhibits for trying a variety of hands-on activities. The ninth annual Bikes For Vets will be held from noon to 4 pm Saturday June 17 at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie, 560 East Third Street. The Sprint Presque Isle State Park Sunset Concert Series takes place Wednesdays from June 21-July 26 from 6:30 pm to sunset. Admission is free. Dr Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Night in Astronomy event on Thursday, June 22. Knacke will speak on “Jupiter, The Giant Planet” beginning at 8:30 pm in 101 Behrend Science Building. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory will follow from 9:30 until 11 pm. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
During the 1920s and early 1930s, commercial fishermen along the Lake Erie shore unloaded thousands of pounds of a cargo they called “midnight herring.” These “herring” weren’t pickled, but the people who bought the precious cargo surely were. “Midnight herring” was alcohol smuggled across the lake from Canada during Prohibition. This colorful era is recalled at the Erie County History Center with an exhibit called Midnight Herring, a cooperative venture between the History Center and the Port Dover Harbour Museum. It opens June 23. Through photographs, objects and memorabilia, the exhibit brings the colorful characters of the era – the Semple family, the Sisters of St. Benedict and Westfield Jimmy – to life. The exhibit opens in conjunction with the publication of Dr David Frew’s newest book about the cross-lake traffic in contraband, also titled “Midnight Herring” (the cover of which was designed by Eric Armbruster of Bensur Creative).
Performing in Erie on June 25th, 2006, Tanglefoot, Lake Erie’s most exciting maritime musical group, will perform In conjunction with the Midnight Herring exhibit opening and book release, Tanglefoot returns to Erie after ten-year absence to celebrate the Erie County History Center annual History Makers event. The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place June 26 – July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event.

With regard to the SUV/pedestrian...I've heard a lot about the pedestrian crossing against the light. I haven't heard anything about the speed the SUV was traveling.

It astounds me that the Ridge Center is getting architectural recognition. I think the exterior of that building is just plain ugly.
An acquaintance called it a Klingon Spaceport and I couldn't find a better way to describe it.
