In November 2004, Snow Contractor John Allin sold his Erie, Pa based Snow Management Group, one of the nation’s largest snow-removal firms at the time, to Symbiot. Symbiot has been a mess ever since. Allin stayed on with the company as corporate vice president of operations until December 2005, when he left to start his own ice-melter manufacturing company, Snow Dragon. Symbiot announced in December 2005 to consolidate its Erie, Pa. operations group to its Utah headquarters. This week Symbiot said it will restructurel its snow removal operations into Symbiot Property Services America. Contractors have until October 13 to file an official claim for any unpaid funds.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for old cell phones for the TRIAD Emergency Cell Phone Program. They have them programmed so the can call 911 and are distributed to the elderly and shut-in’s. Good idea and a worthy cause. If you have an old cell phone bring it along with it’s charger and any accessories you have to the Sheriff’s Office on the 4th Floor of the Erie County Courthouse at 140 West 6th Street in Erie. You can also drop them off at these locations.

Mercyhurst West has enrolled its first student. Abby Barrett, a 2006 graduate of McDowell High School, was accepted June 20 as the first student at Mercyhurst West, the new two-year campus in Girard. She will major in liberal arts. Two other students have since joined her: Alex Wagner and Jennifer Currier.

Erie native David Fabrizio seems to have hit the big time as an actor with a big role in “Superman Returns” playing the villan named Brutus. He’s had smaller roles in such movies as X-Men 2 and Gods and Monsters. Fabrizio has also done a ton of TV from “Party of Five” to “24.”

Erie International Airport Executive Director Kelly Fredericks signed a 5 year contract extention.

Harry Berry of Erie, Pa., is a collector of factory whistles.The whistle was invented in England in 1833 by Adrian Stephenson.

Forensic experts from all over the world convened on the campus of Mercyhurst College for the annual Forensic Anthropology Short Courses, a series of four weeklong classes that began June 5 and conclude this week. All told, 85 students participated in one or more of the short courses offered through the department of applied forensic sciences headed by Dr Dennis Dirkmaat. Students came from Norway, Columbia, Chile, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, and Canada, and across the United States. Students represent a broad cross-section of forensic specialists, among them forensic anthropologists, coroners and pathologists, crime scene investigators, forensic dentists, and graduate students as well as representatives of NASA and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Presque Isle Parasail must be having a good year. Nearly every time I’m on the Bayfron Parkway I see someone 200 feet in the air.

How many times does one have to see the commercial and hear “Everyone loves Marineland” before they go insane? I’m about 3 away from going nuts.

Akron scored twice in the ninth to defeat the Erie SeaWolves 9-7.
Nook Logan could be headed back to the SeaWolves today. He’s batting .185 on the season for Toledo. He broke a finger on opening day and hasn’t gotten it together yet. The home series with Akron continues tonight at 7:05 pm.

The Peek n’ Peak Classic takes place through July 2. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Nationwide Tour event for the final two rounds.

The Victorian Princess has Happy Hour cruises on Wednesday. I’ve gone a couple of times and it’s a blast. You board at 5:30 and cruise around Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie from 6 to 7:30 pm. The cost is $13 and munchies are included. Cash bar. Click here for their 2006 cruise schedule and rates.

Works by Delacriox, Cezanne, Matisse, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and many others are now on display in the Erie Art Museum Main Floor Gallery. The exhibit “Charting a Century of Change: French Nineteenth Century Drawings and Sculpture from the Collection of Herbert and Carol Diamond” features work from a significant period in art history where the traditional artistic values and avant-garde styles clashed. A reception for this exhibit will be held on July 14, 2006 at 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The Erie Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and $2 for children under 12. Annex Gallery and Frame Shop Gallery exhibits are always free. The Museum’s Main Floor and Ground Floor Galleries are free to all on Wednesdays. Learn about the Carrie T Watson Garden Club Labyrinth at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier (LEAF). If you haven’t experienced the labyrinth yet, this week will offer some great opportunities to walk the path.
Grandparents Day : June 27, 10 am, Bring the grandchildren and make plaster finger labyrinths for use at home. Labyrinth games and activities.
Butterflies and Bubbles! : June 29, 1 - 3 pm, Children 3 to 7 years of age are invited to wear their wings and fly like butterflies on the labyrinth path. Giant bubbles will double the fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Labyrinth Evening Walk : June 30, 9 pm, The Labyrinth at LEAF will be illuminated by candles and the moon. Bring a friend and share a meaningful experience as you walk the curving path together.

The Sprint Presque Isle State Park Sunset Concert Series takes place Wednesdays through July 26 from 6:30 pm to sunset. Admission is free. These six entertaining nights of a variety of music, concessions, and kid’s activities will be fun for the whole family. Kid’s activities will be held during the first hour for children ages 6 - 12 and will be guided by a Presque Isle State Park Naturalist. Bring your family down for six fabulous summer nights and enjoy great music along with breathtaking sunsets at Beach 1. One World Tribe performs tonight.

The Erie County Historical Society has a Horse Drawn Carriage Tour with Wine Tasting every Thursday at 7 pm through September 21. This downtown carriage tour focuses on the architecture of Erie’s State Street mercantile and financial district, as well as Perry Square Park and the city’s West Sixth Street Historic District. Mansions, churches, other notable structures, and the Erie Extension Canal are included in this tour of the west side of Erie. After your tour, please join us at the Watson-Curtze Mansion for wine tasting and other refreshments that have been provided by our local wineries. Each guest receives a complimentary wine glass. This weeks Erie Downtown block party on Thursday June 29 at 7 pm takes place on the 1000 block of State Street in front of Docksider, Papa Georges and Nick’s Place. Music by the Red Hot Rug Cutters and The Jim Miller Band. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available.

The Community of Caring, Directed by Mother Mary Beth Kennedy, is having an International Festival and Art Auction featuring muli-ethnic entertainment and refreshments at the Cauley Auditorium, 215 East 4th Street, this Thursday, June 29th from 5-8pm (admission is $10). There will also be a Chinese Auction with items from local businesses…everything from dinner and a movie for two, to family entertainment packs to golfing at Peek’n Peak and so much more. The proceeds will benefit Community of Caring’s orphanages and feeding centers throughout the world. The Honorary Chairperson is Former Mayor Joyce Savocchio - and there will be special guest auctioneers - County Executive Mark Divecchio, Rubye Jenkins-Husband, Jeff Pinski and Sue Weber.

For the third consecutive year Lake Erie Speedway is ready to host the Miller Lite 250 presented by Longhorn Hooters Pro Cup Series race this Friday night, June 30. Mercyhurst College will again host An Old Fashioned Fourth of July at its Erie and North East Campuses. This marks the 23rd celebration in Erie and the 14th in North East. Each year, tens of thousands of people have enjoyed the fun and fireworks at both campuses, and this will be no different. The Vogues, a vocal group from Jeannette, Pa, near Pittsburgh, with several top 40 hits has been entertaining fans since the 1960s, will perform at the main stage on the Erie campus from 8 to 10 pm. Some of the group’s hits include “Five O’clock World,” “Turn Around Look at Me, “You’re the One,” “My Special Angel,” “Till,” and “No, not Much.”
The event will feature a variety of acts around the campus, including Marty O’Connor, the Sweet Adelines, the Celebrant Singers, Geoff the Juggler, the Sonlight puppet Show, the Dixie Doodlers, Thirst N Howl.
Activities include Granny’s Ark Petting Zoo, the Strawberry Shortcake Festival, Erie Clowns, face painting, caricature artists, and strolling magician Devin Knight.
At North East, Jack the Dog will perform at the main stage from 8 to 10 pm., followed by Zambelli fireworks. Other activities will include the Dino Jump and bungee Run, the Bubblegum DS and Face Painting, and Mr Beau the Clown. The first 2,000 visitors to the campus will receive a free US flag.

The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.

My kids have learned to use the rewind feature on the DVR....so I get to see the Marineland commercial about 4 or 5 times each time it comes on.
