The Gannon University Small Business Development Center will honor a number of local and regional businesses at its annual Small Business Awards Program. The businesses will be honored today at a luncheon at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center, 7794 Peach Street. Doors will open at 11 am. Steven S Little, an author and senior consultant with Inc magazine, will give the keynote address. The honorees and the categories in which they will be honored are:

On this date in 1813, Captain James Lawrence commanding the frigate USS Chesapeake off Boston was mortally wounded fighting HMS Shannon. Lawrence shouted, “Tell the men to fire faster and not to give up the ship; fight her till she sinks!” In honor of Captain Lawrence, a group of women stitched the words “Don’t Give Up The Ship” into a flag. The flag was presented to Oliver Hazard Perry, commander of the USS Lawrence, named for Captain Lawrence, in the summer of 1813. Perry went on to capture an entire squadron of British ships in the battle of Lake Erie on September 13, though not before the Lawrence was to damaged to continue. Perry moved his command and the flag to the Niagara. Lawrence’s words became the motto of the US Navy and Perry’s flag now hangs in a place of honor at the United States Naval Academy.
Attorney General Tom Corbett, along with Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk, Crawford County District Attorney Francis Schultz and law enforcement officials from Northwestern Pennsylvania, today announced the success of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Methamphetamine Task Force created last May. Corbett said since last May, the Meth Task Force has seized 28 meth labs in Northwestern Pennsylvania. The labs were located in Erie, Crawford, Venango and Warren counties. Additionally, the task force assisted federal authorities with a lab just across the Ohio border.
High school sophomores and juniors who excel in the sciences still can submit applications for the Regional Summer School of Excellence at Gannon University. Applications will be accepted until Tuesday, June 20. The free program runs from July 10-14 and July 17-21 and is open to students in Erie, Warren, and Crawford counties. Through the program, students experience intensive laboratory and field site study in the life sciences.
Pat Lyon started a document-imaging company, US Imaging of Northwest Pennsylvania, about 18 months ago in Erie, Pa. It makes electronic copies of business records for small companies, such as funeral homes, wanting to reduce storage costs for paper documents.
Visitors to Erie’s Wild Rib Cook-off can enjoy their sticky, spicy treats and learn about preventing and treating heartburn from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy students on June 1 and 2. The students will conduct heartburn screenings on Thursday and Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm in Perry Square.
Baltimore Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera, making a rehab start for Double-A Bowie against the Erie SeaWolves, pitched four no-hit innings and struck out seven yesterday, allowing one unearned run. He walked one, made two wild pitches, hit a batter. The SeaWolves won the game 5-3 in 10 innings. The series with Bowie wrpas up tonight and the team returns to Erie to play Akron on Friday at 7:05 pm.
Jena Shafer, a transfer from Mercyhurst College, has become the fourth and final Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball recruit for the 2006-07 season.
Betsy Mitchell has been appointed as the director of athletics and recreation at Allegheny College, effective July 1, 2006.
The Panthers on Wednesday agreed to an entry level contracts with defenseman Bret Nasby. Nasby, 20, of Grimsby, Ontario, was taken with the team’s fifth choice (152nd overall) in 2004. He played 52 games for Oshawa and Erie this season, with nine goals, 22 assists and 72 penalty minutes.

There are hikes scheduled at Presque Isle State Park for Pennsylvania Hiking Week. Today, it’s the Shifting Sands Hike and the meet takes place at the Gull Point Trailhead at 10 am. All hikes are FREE, no fee, no registration. Friday is the Edible Plant Hike. Meet at the Lighthouse parking lot at 10 am. Saturday is the Bike Hike at the Cookhouse Parking Lot at 10:30 am.
Join the Gem City Jazz Ensemble for a two-hour performance during Erie’s Wild Rib Cookoff and Music Festival Saturday, June 3 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Perry Square gazebo. The 20-member jazz band, under the direction of Tim McKinney, will feature jazz favorites such as Girl from Ipanema, Pennsylvania 65000, Bandstand Boogie and New York, New York. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Presque Isle Volleyball Club Tournament will be held on Saturday June 3. Teams for this tournament will have 6 players with at least 2 players of the opposite sex. There are three levels of play: recreational, intermediate, and power. Prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division. Entry fee is $90 per team. Tournament will take place at Presque Isle State Park Volleyball Facilities at Beach 6. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. and play starts promptly at 9 am. Call Geoff to Pre-Register at (814) 860-8409.
The Walk for a Healthy Community takes place on Saturday, June 3, at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater on the Erie bayfront. The walk is underwritten by Highmark so that all money raised can be directed to the 15 Erie area participating health and human service organizations.
