An Amish family of a father and his two sons were fishing at the Union City Reservoir when their boat overturned. The father, Joas Troyer, was rescued by someone on the shore. Stephen and Matthew of Spartansburg drowned. None of the victims wore life jackets.
Last August, the Erie SeaWolves distributed team pictures with the picture of a missing child added to the corner. The team held an autograph session that night. The thinking is the info on the missing child will be widely seen and not end up in the trash because nobody throws away an autographed picture. That child, Tanya Kach of McKeesport, who had been missing for years has been found. Her being found didn’t have to do with the team photo but it gave the parents hope and they kept searching and she was found. Bairfind distributes team photos at a number of minor league parks.
Accuride Corp said the company’s forging presses at its Erie, PA, facility have returned to full production, following the breakdown of two presses earlier this year. Total costs of the repairs and press downtime could exceed $6.5 million. Accuride manufactures aluminum truck wheels in Erie.
The world’s highest railway from Beijing, China to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa is now open. It took more than 30,000 workers five years and more than $3 billion to build. The line goes through theTanggula Pass at 16,640 ft and across the roof of the world.
Three diesel-powered 3,800-horsepower engines made by GE in Erie, Pennsylvania pull the typical 19 car train 2,500 miles.
Beth Padin, a certified physician assistant, joined the Department of Obstetrics/ Gynecology at Dreyer Medical Clinic in Aurora, IL. Padin graduated in 1991 from Gannon University in Erie, Pa and received her certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants that year.
Reading beat the Erie SeaWolves 9-6. The SeaWolves are home to play at 7:05 pm against Akron. The Dixie Doodlers will be playing their sweet Dixieland sound prior to the game. Also, fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks display, presented by the PA Lottery and Country Fair.
Samantha Reimer will attend Edinboro and play basetball for Stan Swank. Reimer is Altoona’s all-time leading scorer. Reimer wore 33 at Altoona Area High School because Lynette Williams wore 33. Lynette Williams died in a car accident in 1999. Reimer had a number of schools interested in her but Swank knew wearing 33 was important to her and when he handed her a uniform with 33 on it her mind was made up.
Erie SeaWolves first baseman Kelly Hunt has been named the Eastern League’s Player of the Week for the week ending July 2nd. The 25-year old had an outstanding week for the SeaWolves, hitting .360 (9-for-25) with three doubles, five home runs, 10 RBI, six runs scored and a 1.080 slugging percentage in six games. Hunt, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio, had four multiple hit games last week, including a pair of multiple home run games.
Poor Richards Bait and Tackle in Farivew and North East PA will once again host its annual walleye tournament to benefit the SONS of Lake Erie walleye hatchery. The tournament will run from July 15 through Aug 13. It is open to the public at a cost of $10, or $5 if you are already a SONS member. All fish must come from the Pennsylvania portion of Lake Erie waters. Prizes will depend on the number of entrants. For registration, rules, and more information, call 814-474-5623 or 814-725-8483.
The American Red Cross will host the 2006 Presque Isle Bass Fishing Tournament Sunday July 16th, 2006. You may fish Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie waters. Cost for a two person team is $166. This is a live well, no kill tournament. The winning team received $4,000 based on a 100 boat field.
There will be fireworks tonight at Waldameer Amusement Park and Water World. Remember no alcoholic beverages are permitted on park property July 4th, and after 6 pm (fireworks nights) everyone 19 and under not accompanied by their parent must purchase a Ride-A-Rama before entering the Park.
Mercyhurst College will again host An Old Fashioned Fourth of July at its Erie and North East Campuses. This marks the 23rd celebration in Erie and the 14th in North East. Each year, tens of thousands of people have enjoyed the fun and fireworks at both campuses, and this will be no different. The Vogues, a vocal group from Jeannette, Pa, near Pittsburgh, with several top 40 hits has been entertaining fans since the 1960s, will perform at the main stage on the Erie campus from 8 to 10 pm. Some of the group’s hits include “Five O’clock World,” “Turn Around Look at Me, “You’re the One,” “My Special Angel,” “Till,” and “No, not Much.”
The event will feature a variety of acts around the campus, including Marty O’Connor, the Sweet Adelines, the Celebrant Singers, Geoff the Juggler, the Sonlight puppet Show, the Dixie Doodlers, Thirst N Howl.
Activities include Granny’s Ark Petting Zoo, the Strawberry Shortcake Festival, Erie Clowns, face painting, caricature artists, and strolling magician Devin Knight.
At North East, Jack the Dog will perform at the main stage from 8 to 10 pm., followed by Zambelli fireworks. Other activities will include the Dino Jump and bungee Run, the Bubblegum DS and Face Painting, and Mr Beau the Clown. The first 2,000 visitors to the campus will receive a free US flag.
The Sprint Presque Isle State Park Sunset Concert Series this week on Wednesday July 5 features the Bruce Johnstone Trio who will perform from 6:30 pm to sunset. Admission to the park and this event are free.
Bring your family to celebrate July and National Hot Dog Month with food, fun, and entertainment provided by the Sunset Cafe and the Big Green Screen Theatre at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). Join in Thursdays in July from 4pm-7pm, for a Picnic on the Patio and a “Top Dog and A Movie” package, for only $6.95 per person, including a Gourmet Footling Smith’s Hot Dog, Coke and a ticket to one of the featured large format films in July, The Living Sea or Lewis and Clark, showing on the Big Green Screen. Live musical entertainment, games, contests and give-a-ways will be a part of the weekly schedule of events, including Big Green Screen Tickets, T-shirts and other specialty items from the Nature Shop at TREC. Local guest musicians will be performing on the patio each week. Celebrating National Hot Dog month with A Picnic on the Patio Series offers an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy great food, live entertainment, family fun and a captivating film at the Big Green Screen Theatre. A hometown favorite, Smith’s Hot Dogs, will be the feature menu item; top you footling dog with gourmet toppings and sauces. Additional picnic foods will be available through the Sunset Cafe. This event is made possible through the efforts of the Presque Isle Partnership and the Sunset Cafe featuring Smith’s Hot Dogs.
This weeks Erie Downtown block party on Thursday July 6 at 7 pm takes place on the 400 block of State Street in front of Scully’s Pub. Music by Money Shot. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

The 8th annual Pedal to Presque Isle will be held Saturday, July 8. Registration feee is $20 per rider. There are two routes offered; one of 30 miles and another of 75 miles. The 75 mile loop will ride to Presque Isle State Park and return. Both loops begin and end at Conneaut Township Park, 480 Lake Road, Conneaut, Ohio. Registration is welcomed the day of the event. Pre-registration is appreciated.
The 61st annual North East Fireman’s Cherry Festival takes place July 11-15 in North East PA.
The next 3 Erie Downtown Friday night classic and antique car cruise-in’s called Buggin’ State Street will be held from 6-10 pm on July 14, August 11 and September 15.
The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.
The 3rd annual Key West Fest will be held July 21-22 at Liberty Park. The great Jimmy Buffet tribute band Key West Express and Peter Mayer Group will perform.
Here’s some info on a great new Erie area event. The Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, aka Movies in the Park - The Biggest Stars Under The Stars. Movies will begin at 9 pm. Here is a tentative list of films.
