Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday July 5, 2006

Cara Spadacene of Millcreek entered a guilty plea that she ripped of the taxpayers of Erie County of $36,000. Spadacene was ‘reimbursed’ for driving over 71,000 miles while working for the Office of Children and Youth. She would have had to average nearly 40 miles per hour worked to put those kind of miles on her vehicle. She’ll be required to pay back the money but will stay out of jail. So the deterrent to theft with the county is that if you get caught, you’ll have to pay the money back.

In 2005, the percentage doctors trained in Pennsylvania that stayed in Pennsylvania was 7.8 percent. The reason is the high cost of malpractice insurance and lack of tort reform.

Wyatt Torregas hit a homer in the top of the 10th inning to lead Akron to a 2-1 victory over the Erie SeaWolves. The SeaWolves paly Akron again tonight in Erie at 7:05 pm.

Rob Keefe was named Arenafootball2 Defensive Player of the Week. Keefe (5-10, 190), a two-year af2 veteran, came up with a number of big plays on defense to lead the Spokane Shock to an important, 46-23, Week 14 road win against Arkansas. The former Mercyhurst College product posted 3 tackles and also had two fourth-quarter interceptions, helping the expansion Shock clinch a spot in the 2006 playoffs. This is the third ADT Defensive Player of the Week Award for Keefe this season.

With Presque Isle being the most important positive advertisement for Erie,Pa. and a tremendous part of the local economy I wonder why there is no concerted effort to discover exactly where the E-Coli pollution is coming from and stop it.
We are quick to hit the newspaper every time a beach or beaches are closed and say the same thing that it is probably coming from one of the streams to the west of Erie.
I think it is time that the personnel whose jobs depend on Presque Isle such as the Park Rangers,Fish Commission employees, the Coast Guard to a certain extent, the infamous Border Patrol who to this day I do not know who they are protecting us from and all the college students who are doing Summer Internships with regard to water quality started walking up the streams on the west side of Presque Isle taking water samples and find out where this pollution is coming from and stop it.
I am sure there ther are many citizens including myself who would volunteer to work on such an effort also because most every citizen in Erie County is proud of Presque Isle and would do anything possible to preserve the quality that it is known for.
