Registration is no longer required for viewing content on Jacksonville Times-Union web site. This quote on their site explains their decision “The online users have spoken, so to speak, and many do not like the idea of registering to view content. A few complained about having to provide personal information or go through the steps to register. Others just stayed away. In a recent national study, 54 percent of Internet users surveyed by the Pew Internet and American Life Project said they had never registered at a Web site in order to obtain news or information. That is a group too large to ignore; its size is one reason newspapers are relaxing registration requirements.” Can anyone think of a newspaper in the Erie area that should do the same? nixing user registration is one of the MANY things goerie.com needs to change. I can see all of their developers laughing to the bank at being paid for this abortion of a site.

You don't have to register to view things at goerie.com or most any other news site. Go to bugmenot.com and get a (free) login and password and goerie.com need never know. BugMeNot is a site devoted to thwarting registration-required sites that collect personal information for no real reason.

I use bugmenot.com all the time. Try it.

Yeah I use BugMeNot as well, but the point remains that you shouldn't have to, the news should just be out there. The Times too should realize that if a large amount of people are using phony data, the whole exercise has failed. What's the point of collecting marketing data if the data's no good.

Removing the lame registration also opens them up to all sorts of growth opportunities. Inclusion in something like Google News would bring all sorts of traffic to their site. Traffic = more ad views which eventually equals more money. It's so sad that they just don't seem to get it at all.

In the end it's all roses for us - our traffic here at ErieBlogs is through the roof, as Dennis mentioned the other day, and it's only growing (and remaining registration-free). Thanks, GoErie!

I use Bug Me Not also and agree with Mike. Since when did you not have to register for goerie.com? Everytime i send an article to someone that hadn't registered previously is told to sign up.
