Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk said at a news conference on Friday that no charges will be filed in the deaths of Andrew Miller and Amber Miller. The two were riding a Sea-Doo and collided with a 38 foot Donzi driven by Ryan LaRiccia. The Donzi had the right of way.
The Fireside Restaurant and Lounge in Harborcreek, Colliss Dolan Inc, has been added to the state Revenue Department’s tax delinquent list. The bar owed $14,880.47 in back sales tax.
On Friday morning WJET-TV morning anchor Trina Orlando was doing an interview about children eating a healthy breakfast. The lady asked Trina what she usually has for breakfast. Trina relied “Red Bull and pretzels - breakfast of champions.” The nutritionist had a jaw dropping look of shock and horror on her face. It was hilarious.
Eleven high school students have been offered guaranteed medical school admission through the Gannon University “4+4” medical program with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). While these students will take the same rigorous Pre-Medicine program available to all Pre-Med students at Gannon, the LECOM 4 + 4 students are guaranteed a seat four years from now in LECOM. While they will have to maintain their grades and perform well on the medical college admission test, they will not have to go through an additional interview to get into LECOM.
The Minority College Experience (MCE) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) programs at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are seeing a record number of high school students participate in these eight-week college- and career-preparation courses. Both programs run through Friday, August 4. To date, students have participated in a psychology showcase at Penn State Behrend, an interactive leadership institute at Family First Sports Park, and educational career field trips to General Electric, Lord Corporation and Eriez Magnetics. Still to come, MCE and WISE students will participate in an engineering showcase at Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, July 12, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Erie Zoo on Wednesday, July 19. Both programs are open to high school juniors with a grade-point average of 2.75 or better and a minimum SAT score of 900 or PSAT score of 90. There is no tuition charge for either MCE or WISE.
Rebecca Hower of KDKA gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday. Rebecca graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville and started working at WICU-TV in Erie - first as a producer, then a reporter, before moving to the anchor desk.
The Altoona Curve scored a run in their final at-bat to defeat the Erie SeaWolves 5-4 at Jerry Uht Park on Friday night. Dmitri Young went 1-for-3 with an RBI while starting at first base. The Curve and SeaWolves will resume their series Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park. A pair of All-Stars will face off when Altoona’s Landon Jacobsen starts against Erie’s Nate Bumstead at 7:05 pm. The first 1,000 kids to enter the ballpark will receive a FREE baseball cap courtesy of Peps.
Shannon Pagano of Gannon University women’s lacrosse team tore her right knee ACL and MCL during the final game of 2005. This year Pagano was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/ US Lacrosse Division II All-America first team, IWLCA All-Region first team, and was also one of 38 student-athletes named to the IWLCA Academic Division II Honor Roll.
The 18th annual Erie Panegyri Greek Festival will be held today and Sunday at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. For any info call (814) 838-8808.
Droopy Basset Hound Rescue of Western PA will hold their 7th annual Slobberfest today. Same location as last year in Union City, PA; aprox 20 miles south of Erie, PA. Registration starts at 10 am, with games starting 11 am. All proceeds to go to help Bassets in need.
The 8th annual Pedal to Presque Isle will be held today. Registration feee is $20 per rider. There are two routes offered; one of 30 miles and another of 75 miles. The 75 mile loop will ride to Presque Isle State Park and return. Both loops begin and end at Conneaut Township Park, 480 Lake Road, Conneaut, Ohio. Registration is welcomed the day of the event. Pre-registration is appreciated.
The 2006 Lake Erie Fanfare Drum and Bugle Corps Show takes place July 10 beginning at 7 pm at Erie Veterans Stadium, 26th and State Streets. Tickets for the 23rd annual competition run $12 to $20. Call (814) 456-5300 for ticket ordering.
The 61st annual North East Fireman’s Cherry Festival takes place July 11-15 in North East PA.
This weeks Erie Downtown block party tonight at 7 pm takes place on the 1200 block of State Street in front of the Cell Block. Robert “Vanilla Ice” Van Winkle performs. I guess Milli Vanilli was busy that day. I wonder if Todd Bridges is? The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for sale.
The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 13, with a performance by Dutch carillonneur Anne Kroeze. Kroeze, the appointed carillonneur for Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Epe, The Netherlands, will play the college’s Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon beginning at 7 pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating will be on the lawn of the John M. Lilley Library, so concertgoers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served. The following Thursday, July 20, the featured musician will be Clemson University carillonneur Linda Dzuris. Charles Dairay, carillonneur for Orchies, France, will conclude the series on Thursday, July 27.
The next 3 Erie Downtown Friday night classic and antique car cruise-in’s called Buggin’ State Street will be held from 6-10 pm on July 14, August 11 and September 15.
The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.
The 2006 Presque Isle Half Marathon will be held Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 7:30 am.
The 3rd annual Key West Fest will be held July 21-22 at Liberty Park. The great Jimmy Buffet tribute band Key West Express and Peter Mayer Group will perform.

Gannon University will co-host a summer camp for youth who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.The Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) also will be hosted by Presque Isle State Park and Family First Sports Park. The adventure camp is designed for children ages 8-12 and will run Monday-Friday, July 24-28. The camp will be held at Presque Isle State Park and will allow participants to explore the outdoors, learn team building skills, and challenge themselves by engaging in fun adventures and activities. The camp is presented by the Gannon University Continuing Education and Computer Training Center. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and is encouraged by Friday, July 14. The summer sky will be the topic of the next Summer Open House Night in Astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the college’s School of Science, will present “Summer Stars and the Milky Way” at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. This Summer Open House Night in Astronomy is free and open to the public. It is a non-technical presentation for ages 6 and older. For more information, call the School of Science at 814-898-6105.
