A 9 year old boy from Wattsburg was part of a group of Cub Scouts hiking when the edge of the trail gaveway and he tumbled 200 feet down the western rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Although he’ll be black and blue, he wasn’t seriously hurt.

Three new microbreweries will be openg soon in the area. The Sprague Farm and Brew Works will be opening this Friday (see grand opening details below), The Brewerie at Union Station at 14th and French will be opening near the end of this month and the Voodoo Brewery on Arch Street in Meadvill will be opening in September.

A local Gannon University student has been chosen to participate in a prestigious summer program. The student, Que-Anh Le of Millcreek Township, will participate in the Collegiate Women of Color Leadership Development Institute. The program will be held Aug 10-13 at the Mt Washington Conference Center in Baltimore, Md. Le is the daughter of Phat V and Hong Q Le and is a graduate of Erie Villa Maria Academy. She is a LECOM “3+4” program at Gannon. The “3+4” is an accelerated program in which the undergraduate professional program of education leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Health Science is awarded by Gannon University after 3 years, and the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is awarded by LECOM at the end of year 7.

Nate Bumstead and two Erie SeaWolves relievers combined for a seven-hit shutout as the SeaWolves handed the Altoona Curve a 3-0 loss Saturday night in the second game of a four-game series at Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie. The Curve and SeaWolves will play the third game of their four-game set at Uht Park Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. Left-hander Mike Connolly (6-3, 3.69) will take the mound for Altoona and will be opposed by Erie righty Virgil Vasquez (4-7, 4.06).

Today is Amanda’s Notary Service Kid’s Night at Eriez Speedway. Along with the planned giveaways including several bicycles the E-Mod division will qualify for their feature event in a series of single elimination match races dubbed “King of the Hill”. Titusville’s Robbie Blair will defend his Super Late Model King of the Hill title against Ashville’s Steve Halpainy. Blair has made three appearances at Eriez this season and on each occasion has won his qualifying heat and finished fourth or better in each feature event. Originally Wattsburg’s Scott Johnson, current Super Late Model point leader, was scheduled to challenge Blair but loss of a race engine forced him to withdraw. All of the divisions will be competing this Sunday but the Outlaw Cadets and Challenger divisions will earn no points for the night. This was done to allow competitors to schedule a vacation without affecting their race for the Eriez Point Championship. Next week the Spectator and E-Mods will not be awarded points. Gates will open at 4:30 pm with racing starting promptly at 6 pm.

The 18th annual Erie Panegyri Greek Festival continues today at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road. For info call (814) 838-8808.

The 2006 Lake Erie Fanfare Drum and Bugle Corps Show takes place July 10 beginning at 7 pm at Erie Veterans Stadium, 26th and State Streets. Tickets for the 23rd annual competition run $12 to $20. Call (814) 456-5300 for ticket ordering.

The 61st annual North East Fireman’s Cherry Festival takes place July 11-15 in North East PA.

The Sprint Presque Isle State Park Sunset Concert Series this week on Wednesday July 12 features singer, fiddler and songwriter, Laura Cortese who will perform from 6:30 pm to sunset at Beach 1. Admission to the park and this event are free as always.

This weeks Erie Downtown block party Thursday night at 7 pm takes place on the 1200 block of State Street in front of the Cell Block. Robert “Vanilla Ice” Van Winkle performs. I guess Milli Vanilli was busy that day. I wonder if Todd Bridges is? The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 13, with a performance by Dutch carillonneur Anne Kroeze. Kroeze, the appointed carillonneur for Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Epe, The Netherlands, will play the college’s Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon beginning at 7 pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating will be on the lawn of the John M. Lilley Library, so concertgoers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served. The following Thursday, July 20, the featured musician will be Clemson University carillonneur Linda Dzuris. Charles Dairay, carillonneur for Orchies, France, will conclude the series on Thursday, July 27.

The Sprague Farm and Brew Works will hold a grand opening on Friday July 14. Jake Banta of Jakes Blues will be performing and they’ll be giving out samples. The former dairy farm has a lodge, the Sleeping Leaf Farm Lodge, with the microbrewery housedin the barn. It is located at 22019 US Hwy 6 and 19, in Venango, PA, between Meadville and Cambridge Springs.

The next 3 Erie Downtown Friday night classic and antique car cruise-in’s called Buggin’ State Street will be held from 6-10 pm on July 14, August 11 and September 15.

The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.

The 2006 Presque Isle Half Marathon will be held Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 7:30 am.

The 3rd annual Key West Fest will be held July 21-22 at Liberty Park. The great Jimmy Buffet tribute band Key West Express and Peter Mayer Group will perform.

Allegheny College will hold a soccer camp, July 23-27 in Meadville Pa for kids ages 10-18. Overnight $330, commuter $250. Team and sibling discounts are available. Call 814-332-4782 or 814-332-5208 or download an application.

Gannon University will co-host a summer camp for youth who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.The Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) also will be hosted by Presque Isle State Park and Family First Sports Park. The adventure camp is designed for children ages 8-12 and will run Monday-Friday, July 24-28. The camp will be held at Presque Isle State Park and will allow participants to explore the outdoors, learn team building skills, and challenge themselves by engaging in fun adventures and activities. The camp is presented by the Gannon University Continuing Education and Computer Training Center. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and is encouraged by Friday, July 14. The summer sky will be the topic of the next Summer Open House Night in Astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the college’s School of Science, will present “Summer Stars and the Milky Way” at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. This Summer Open House Night in Astronomy is free and open to the public. It is a non-technical presentation for ages 6 and older. For more information, call the School of Science at 814-898-6105.

Here’s some info on a great new Erie area event. The Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, aka Movies in the Park - The Biggest Stars Under The Stars. Movies will begin at 9 pm. Here is a tentative list of films.
