Jack Tirak has started a new blog called Erie Media-Go-Round. Tirak is ‘THE’ expert on Erie media. He seems to have agnered a couple of people at WSEE. The blog, including the comments, is a must read.
Who at Case Management Support Services pissed off a Erie County Council member? County Council council voted 5-2 to create a new county run controlled Behavioral Health Management Care taking mental health services out of the hands of Case Management. Politians love to micro-manage.
The Erie PA based Center for eBusiness and Advanced IT (eBizITPA) applauds new legislation passed by the Pennsylvania Senate on June 30 and signed into law by Governor Ed Rendell on July 7. The Local Government Unit Electronic Bidding Act, PA Act 88 of 2006, allows local government units — municipalities, school districts, COGs, authorities and others — to incorporate electronic bidding and reverse auctions into their competitive bidding processes. eBizITPA offers training programs and services to help local government units maximize the advantages of e-business tools. eBizITPA offers eDynaQuote, an easy to use electronic bidding and reverse auction tool. The passing of this law is going to save taxpayers tons of money.
A $3.5 million research project called the “Great Ships Initiative” was announced yesterday which will seek out the most effective ways to kill or remove organisms from ballast water. Unlike past efforts, carriers are behind this project with FedNav Ltd and Algoma Central doing testing on their vessels. Invasive species coming over is ballast tanks including the Zebra Mussel, Round Goby and the Sea Lamprey have been major problems in Lake Erie.
Alan Kugler is president of PA Futures, an Erie PA based consulting firm that works on municipal consolidation issues. He’s got a hard, if not impossible job. A couple of years ago a merger reached the ballot in Mercer County communities of Hermitage, Sharon, Farrell, Wheatland and Sharpsville to consolidate into a new city called Shenango Valley. It was defeated in all communities by a wide margin. West Middlesex and Shenango Township are thinkg about merging but even having a study done has people in both communities complaining.
Erie native Theodore Skarupski was shot to death in Hudson FL, the town which he moved to after high school.
Antenna Software Inc announced that Richard Scott has been named executive vice president for global sales and marketing. He holds a BS degree cum laude in Economics from Allegheny College and an MBA with distinction from the New York Institute of Technology Cardean Program.
The Lake Erie Areas of Concern Summit opened up yesterday and continues today at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie.
The 61st annual North East Fireman’s Cherry Festival continues today and runs through Saturday in North East PA.. The crowd there yesterday was huge.
The Sprint Presque Isle State Park Sunset Concert Series this week on Wednesday July 12 features singer, fiddler and songwriter, Laura Cortese who will perform from 6:30 pm to sunset at Beach 1. Admission to the park and this event are free as always.
Bring your family to celebrate July and National Hot Dog Month with food, fun, and live musical entertainment provided by the Sunset Cafe and the Big Green Screen Theatre at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). Join in Thursdays in July from 4pm-7pm, for a Picnic on the Patio and a “Top Dog and a Movie” package, for only $6.95 per person, including a Gourmet Footlong Smith’s Hot Dog, Coke and a ticket to one of the featured large format films. This weeks Erie Downtown block party Thursday night at 7 pm takes place on the 1200 block of State Street in front of the Cell Block. Robert “Vanilla Ice” Van Winkle performs. I guess Milli Vanilli was busy that day. I wonder if Todd Bridges is? The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for sale.
The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 13, with a performance by Dutch carillonneur Anne Kroeze. Kroeze, the appointed carillonneur for Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Epe, The Netherlands, will play the college’s Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon beginning at 7 pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating will be on the lawn of the John M. Lilley Library, so concertgoers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served. The following Thursday, July 20, the featured musician will be Clemson University carillonneur Linda Dzuris. Charles Dairay, carillonneur for Orchies, France, will conclude the series on Thursday, July 27.
The Erie Art Museum, 411 State Street in Erie PA, will celebrate the opening of three exhibits Friday, July 14 from 8 pm to 10 pm with a free public reception. The exhibits include a 19th Century French Art exhibit titled “Charting a Century of Change” in the Main Floor Gallery, “David Hayes: Small Sculptures and Studies” in the Frame Shop Gallery and “Carol Cornelison: A Return to Nature” in the Annex Gallery. The Sprague Farm and Brew Works will hold a grand opening on Friday July 14. Jake Banta of Jakes Blues will be performing and they’ll be giving out samples. The former dairy farm has a lodge, the Sleeping Leaf Farm Lodge, with the microbrewery housedin the barn. It is located at 22019 US Hwy 6 and 19, in Venango, PA, between Meadville and Cambridge Springs.
The next 3 Erie Downtown Friday night classic and antique car cruise-in’s called Buggin’ State Street will be held from 6-10 pm on July 14, August 11 and September 15.
The Roadhouse Theatre is presenting a very special program this summer featuring our very own Queen of Jazz Mary Alice Brown. Mary Alice Brown stars in “Class is in Session” Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, July 14th – August 26th. (Sat July 15th is sold out.) The show will focus on Mary’s life’s work in four sections (with wardrobe changes!) The evening will begin with Mary at a fire-engine red grand piano playing le Clair de Lune. We will traverse through stylings of jazz, blues, calypso and finish with the very best of Mary Alice Brown. The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.
The 2006 Presque Isle Half Marathon will be held Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 7:30 am.
The 3rd annual Key West Fest will be held July 21-22 at Liberty Park. The great Jimmy Buffet tribute band Key West Express and Peter Mayer Group will perform.

Gannon University will co-host a summer camp for youth who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.The Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) also will be hosted by Presque Isle State Park and Family First Sports Park. The adventure camp is designed for children ages 8-12 and will run Monday-Friday, July 24-28. The camp will be held at Presque Isle State Park and will allow participants to explore the outdoors, learn team building skills, and challenge themselves by engaging in fun adventures and activities. The camp is presented by the Gannon University Continuing Education and Computer Training Center. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and is encouraged by Friday, July 14. The summer sky will be the topic of the next Summer Open House Night in Astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the college’s School of Science, will present “Summer Stars and the Milky Way” at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. This Summer Open House Night in Astronomy is free and open to the public. It is a non-technical presentation for ages 6 and older. For more information, call the School of Science at 814-898-6105.
