A couple of kids, 13 and 14, attempted a hold up with a gun last night at the Wendy’s on Buffalo Road. State police troopers quickly caught them as their cars went faster than the kids making their getaway peddling their bicycles.

The Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies in Erie will be given a wind turbine by the state. The Southwest Windpower small-scale wind system will be mounted in the ground on a 35 foot tower and will generate 1.8 kilowatts of electricity, enough to meet the needs of a typical home. The units are valued at $10,000 each.

Construction is well under way for 3 hangers at the Ashtabula County Airport. Only 6 of the 27 hanger spaces are still available to rent. Lakeside Aviation of Erie took over at the beginning of July as the airports fixed base operator. Erie Management Group is the parent company of Lakeside Aviation.

Leah Hillgrove portrays Emma in the “Jekyll & Hyde” at the Apple Hill Playhouse in Delmont, PA. Hillgrove is a graduate of Gannon University double majoring in theater, and radio and television broadcasting. Her dad is sportscaster Bill Hillgrove.

Nacel Open Door, a foreign exchange student program is in immediate need of host families for students that are scheduled to arrive in August. Students bring their own spending money. Students come from France, Spain, Germany, and Mexico. Host families are asked to provide them with room, board and companionship. The Community Blood Bank of NW PA has made a few changes with their website hiring someone that will keep it up to date and switching hosting companies so it will be up for more than 22 hours a day.

Catcher Mike Rabelo will be promoted from the Erie SeaWolves to Toledo to take the place of Max St Pierre, who will go on the disabled list with a rib injury.

Chris Cioccio of Erie PA competing for Color Me Safe Racing finished in the middle of the pack in his age group at the USA Cycling National Festival held at Seven Springs, PA.

Bring your family to celebrate July and National Hot Dog Month with food, fun, and live musical entertainment provided by the Sunset Cafe and the Big Green Screen Theatre at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). Join in Thursdays in July from 4pm-7pm, for a Picnic on the Patio and a “Top Dog and a Movie” package, for only $6.95 per person, including a Gourmet Footlong Smith’s Hot Dog, Coke and a ticket to one of the featured large format films. The Erie County Historical Society has a Horse Drawn Carriage Tour with Wine Tasting every Thursday at 7 pm through September 21. This downtown carriage tour focuses on the architecture of Erie’s State Street mercantile and financial district, as well as Perry Square Park and the city’s West Sixth Street Historic District. Mansions, churches, other notable structures, and the Erie Extension Canal are included in this tour of the west side of Erie. After your tour, please join us at the Watson-Curtze Mansion for wine tasting and other refreshments that have been provided by our local wineries. Each guest receives a complimentary wine glass. The Director’s Circle Theater located in the Renaissance Center at 10th and State Streets in Erie presents “Hush Up Sweet Charlotte.” Directed by Michael Weiss. Show times are Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm through August 5. For more details call 814-451-1153.

This weeks Erie Downtown block party Thursday night at 7 pm takes place on the 1200 block of State Street in front of the Cell Block. Robert Van Winkle performs. You might know him better as “Vanilla Ice”. I guess Milli Vanilli was busy. The event is FREE. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

The summer Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, begins Thursday, July 13, with a performance by Dutch carillonneur Anne Kroeze. Kroeze, the appointed carillonneur for Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Epe, The Netherlands, will play the college’s Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon beginning at 7 pm. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating will be on the lawn of the John M. Lilley Library, so concertgoers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Refreshments will be served. The following Thursday, July 20, the featured musician will be Clemson University carillonneur Linda Dzuris. Charles Dairay, carillonneur for Orchies, France, will conclude the series on Thursday, July 27.


The Erie Yacht Club. is hosting the 2006 Snipe Nationals through July 14 on Presque Isle Bay on the Erie bayfront..

The Jazz Erie 2006 Jazz and Blues Walk will be held on July 15th. This years festival of jazz music will feature twelve bands playing at downtown venues. Price of admission is a $10 button which are availableat the participating bars.

The Gem City Rock and Mineral Society will host the 37th Annual Gem and Mineral Show July 15-16 at Perry Hi-way Hose Company, 8270 Peach Street in Erie. Saturday hours are 10 am-6 pm. Sunday hours are 10 am-5 pm. Free parking is available.

The Erie Art Museum, 411 State Street in Erie PA, will celebrate the opening of three exhibits Friday, July 14 from 8 pm to 10 pm with a free public reception. The exhibits include a 19th Century French Art exhibit titled “Charting a Century of Change” in the Main Floor Gallery, “David Hayes: Small Sculptures and Studies” in the Frame Shop Gallery and “Carol Cornelison: A Return to Nature” in the Annex Gallery. The Friday reception is free and open to the public. For more information on these exhibits contact the Erie Art Museum at (814) 459-5477.

The Sprague Farm and Brew Works will hold a grand opening on Friday July 14. Jake Banta of Jakes Blues will be performing and they’ll be giving out samples. The former dairy farm has a lodge, the Sleeping Leaf Farm Lodge, with the microbrewery housedin the barn. It is located at 22019 US Hwy 6 and 19, in Venango, PA, between Meadville and Cambridge Springs.

The next 3 Erie Downtown Friday night classic and antique car cruise-in’s called Buggin’ State Street will be held from 6-10 pm on July 14, August 11 and September 15.

The Roadhouse Theatre is presenting a very special program this summer featuring our very own Queen of Jazz Mary Alice Brown. Mary Alice Brown stars in “Class is in Session” Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, July 14th - August 26th. (Sat July 15th is sold out.) The show will focus on Mary’s life’s work in four sections (with wardrobe changes!) The evening will begin with Mary at a fire-engine red grand piano playing le Clair de Lune. We will traverse through stylings of jazz, blues, calypso and finish with the very best of Mary Alice Brown. Reservations can be made by phone at (814) 456-5656 or in person at the Theatre Box Office, 145 West 11th Street in Erie. Box Office hours are 2-6 PM Tuesday - Saturday. The 2006 Erie Airshow will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, 2006. The Air Show will be held at Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field. The schedule of performances and static display aircraft present will be the same each day, so you can attend either day and see the same great show. Gates will open each day at 10 am with the flying portion of the airshow will begin at noon each day.

The 2006 Presque Isle Half Marathon will be held Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 7:30 am.

The 3rd annual Key West Fest will be held July 21-22 at Liberty Park. The great Jimmy Buffet tribute band Key West Express and Peter Mayer Group will perform.

Allegheny College will hold a soccer camp, July 23-27 in Meadville Pa for kids ages 10-18. Overnight $330, commuter $250. Team and sibling discounts are available. Call 814-332-4782 or 814-332-5208 or download an application.

Gannon University will co-host a summer camp for youth who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.The Junior Naturalist Outdoor Adventure Camp (JNOAC) also will be hosted by Presque Isle State Park and Family First Sports Park. The adventure camp is designed for children ages 8-12 and will run Monday-Friday, July 24-28. The camp will be held at Presque Isle State Park and will allow participants to explore the outdoors, learn team building skills, and challenge themselves by engaging in fun adventures and activities. The camp is presented by the Gannon University Continuing Education and Computer Training Center. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and is encouraged by Friday, July 14. The summer sky will be the topic of the next Summer Open House Night in Astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the college’s School of Science, will present “Summer Stars and the Milky Way” at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. This Summer Open House Night in Astronomy is free and open to the public. It is a non-technical presentation for ages 6 and older. For more information, call the School of Science at 814-898-6105.


Discover Presque Isle will be held July 28-30, 2006. Presque Isle State Park flourishes with activity during this annual event. The weekend encompasses one of the area’s largest craft shows, volleyball tournament, duathlon, mile swim, sand soccer, food vendors, extensive children’s area, sand sculptures, bonfires on the beach, live music and so much more.

Here’s some info on a great new Erie area event. The Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, aka Movies in the Park - The Biggest Stars Under The Stars. Movies will begin at 9 pm. Here is a tentative list of films.
