"self-proclaimed inventor of the internet" Really? http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp
Incidentally, the Smug Alert was greatly overshadowed by the Miasma of Pretension. And "drove from hundreds of miles around" - on what do you base that assertion?

Al Gore - "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
Even to an ALCU lawyer that sounds like he said he he invented the internet.
And "drove from hundreds of miles around" - on what do you base that assertion?
That fact that cars have license plates. The name of the state they came from is on the plate. And since cars can't fly, I'm assuming they drove from the state named on the plate.

Interesting. Doesn't sound like he said "I invented the internet" at all. Yet that's how it's been spun you bought right into it.
I counted 14 Prius and two of them were from states other than NY and PA. Perhaps you were in a different parking lot. But still, better to drive a hybrid "from hundreds of miles around" than one of the plethora of gas guzzlers filling the parking lot and driveways on the grounds.

I have to disagree, Dennis. He did not invent the network that DARPA created. Rather, he helped to make the Internet what it is today.
The Snopes article says it better than I can:
"Clearly, although Gore's phrasing was clumsy (and perhaps self-serving), he was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet (in the sense of having designed or implemented it), but that he was responsible, in an economic and legislative sense, for fostering the development the technology that we now know as the Internet."
And this is true. Gore gets alot of negative comments thrown his way, but he's truly a good man who works for the common good.

Dennis, go back and read the Snopes article. As the article points out, the words "create" and "invent" mean different things. Eisenhower played a crucial role in the interstate highway system. so even if he didn't personally devise a system of roadways, it is meaningful to credit him with helping to bring it into being by virture of encouraging legislation.
As I recall, G.W. Bush in his second debate referred to "the Internets", so say what you will, at least Gore can use the term correctly. ;)
If you browse to http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/06/27/gore.science.ap/, climate experts agree that Gore is indeed getting the science basically right.
Hmm, Bush still hasn't managed to find those weapons of mass destruction that was supposedly the catalyst for rushing over to Iraq. So, I guess I find the implication that Gore is somehow being alarmist or silly about what is well-supported fact is a rather curious contrast to a claim about weapons that have cost US taxpayers billions of dollars and over 2500 lives.
