Erie PA News and Events for Thursday July 27, 2006
Congrats to Pennsylvania Sate Police Troop E commander Kevin Dugan. Dugan was off-duty and driving over 12th Street when he heard an alarm going off. After calling in the alarm, he asked the witness of a break-in for a description of the suspect. The quickly found the guy who was making his getaway on foot at 3 mph and followed him until police arrived.
Philadelphia Governor Eddie Rendell signed a warrant for the execution of Stephen E Treiber, Erie County, by lethal injection. Treiber’s execution is scheduled for Thursday, Sept 21. In October 2002, Treiber was convicted of the arson murder of his two- year-old daughter, Jessica. He was subsequently sentenced to death on November 4, 2002. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court affirmed the sentence on May 16, 2005. Treiber filed a petition for a writ of certiorari in the Supreme Court of the United States in February of this year. The petition was denied on April 17, 2006.

Representatives Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) and Phil English (R-PA), members of the House Ways and Means Committee, introduced H.R. 5889, the “Great Lakes Short Sea Shipping Enhancement Act of 2006.” The legislation is designed to improve the efficiency of commerce in Cleveland (Ohio), Erie (Pennsylvania), and the surrounding Great Lakes region and ports. Under current law, the Harbor Maintenance Tax (HMT) is assessed on cargo transported between US ports, and cargo imported to US ports from other countries. Because the HMT is only assessed on cargo if it moves by ship, the tax serves as a disincentive to move trucks and their freight by water. As such, the tax actually contributes to greater highway congestion which results in choked border crossings, increased fuel consumption, and increased air pollution. This will help Cleveland and Erie with both cities planning cargo ferry service to Ontario. Ray Schreckengost, Executive Director of the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, also noted, “this critical legislation will remove the Harbor Maintenance Tax as an obstacle to our new freight ferry service to Nanticoke, Ontario. The transformation of our port into a hub of cross-border commerce will bring jobs and economic development to this community.”
WJET-TV has a Name The Headliner contest for Celebrate Erie. If you think you know who be playing the mainstage on Friday August 18th, give it a shot. I’m guessing it’s “Train.” It fits their schedule.

Congratulations to Trooper Dugan. It's good to know that some of our officers really embrace their calling.
As for LeCorchick's website, someone direct him to a professional web designer. Although I appreciate what he's doing (along with the RSS feeds), the site is kind of ugly (no offense).

Captain Dougan is an excellent commanding officer. How many Police Officers would stop and investigate an alarm not in their patrol area? Troop E is fortunate he is their commanding officer.

While Lecorchick gets "kudos and plaudettes" for having RSS feeds on his site (and multiple flavors too), they aren't constructed well. I wanted to add them to this site's aggregator and the times and dates are all off, like it's republishing each item each time a new story is added. So close, but so far.

Did you just say "plaudettes"?
