Erie PA News and Events for Monday July 31, 2006

I’m a real estate agent in Eire and occasionally I preview homes for clients. Saves everybody time that way. I went through a home in the Garden Court area of Erie. First, it’s news that someone is considering buying a house in the City of Erie. Because of the taxes and schools, nearly everyone wants to live outside the city limits. But the real story is what was in the basement. A nuclear bomb shelter. It was complete with lead-lined walls to stop radiation from penetrating. It had to date from the 1950’s. Gotta love Cold War memorabilia.

The weekly Monday cruise-in takes place this evening from 6-9 pm in the Park ‘n Ride Facility parking lot on the Bayfront Highway.

Dan Rice Days takes place Aug 4 - 5 in Girard PA. After decades of sponsoring fireworks in Erie and in North East, Mercyhurst College will light up the night sky for the second year in a row in western Erie County as it partners with the annual Dan Rice Days celebration. On Saturday, Aug 5, at 10 pm, Zambelli Internationale will launch fireworks from the former Divine Word Seminary property off Route 20 in Girard, which Mercyhurst purchased last year for the launch of its third campus, Mercyhurst West. This year’s fireworks are planned to celebrate the inauguration of Dr Thomas J Gamble as Mercyhurst’s 11th president and to mark the opening of classes at Mercyhurst West on August 30. Classes will be held at a temporary site, the former Faith Lutheran Church at 824 Main Street East in Girard, as the college prepares to develop its new campus on Route 20.

Circa 1981 we were looking for a place to rent and living in central Florida. One of the houses there had a fully set-up fallout shelter as well. Basements are a no-go in Florida (at least in central FL) so I'd never encountered anything remotely like it. Metal walls, lined w/ shelving and a door like a bank safe. We didn't rent it; we ended up buying a place instead.
